I went looking at automotive baby seats the other day. They vary substantially, mainly on the age of the baby. For me, this raised the question: ought there be (or are there) different sizes or styles for bicycles? I have only seen a couple different varieties of baby seats (I'm aware that trailers might offer a wide variety of options, but I'm thinking exclusively of attachable seats) but they all seem to be sized for toddlers. I did see a British company on line that looked like it had some potential. However their web site was very user unfriendly.

Does anyone know of a decent (or any for that matter) baby seat that is actually made for a baby?

this is a tangent that you really didn't ask, but have you really considered a trailer over the bike seat. IMHO, the trailer is way safer. If you fall with the bikeseat, the child is hitting the ground from a pretty high perch. If you fall with the trailer, 1) the odds are the trailer isn't going over, 2) if it does the child has a bit of protection around them from the trailer's frame, and 3) the child is falling from a much lower height.
Also trailers, particularly if you use the flag, are very visible, Auto drivers think their cute, and they tend to give you a very wide berth.
Not to mention you can toss favorite toys in the trailer.
Finally, the wieght of the child high on a bikeseat affects bike handling much more than pulling a well designed trailer.

Thanks. I'm too cheap to buy a (an additional, child-specific) trailer. However, for the next year or so, I'll look into borrowing other people's trailers until I have a large enough wee little one to fit in the "child" seat. Thanks again for the responses.

I would really suggest trying to get a trailer for hauling your child. I have been using one with my 2 1/2 year old son for over a year now I agree it is the safest way to go. Trust me, I have fallen (forgetting to clip out) and the trailer does not even move. My son loves it. I think I picked mine up at Nashbar for something like $79.

Another vote for a trailer. It is spendy, but in my opinion it's well worth the cost. And they are very safe. My buddy has the same trailer as I do (Chariot Cougar 2) and actually crashed on some loose gravel while pulling it. The kids were securely strapped in and they actually thought it was a great trick!
