Bicycle Mechanics - When replace tires?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I bought some premium road tires last spring, and since then have put about 1,000 miles on them. They look okay, but I was wondering how many miles I can reasonably expect to get out of front and rear tires. Should I replace them after a certain number of miles, or should I wait until the cords show through the tread? There are a lot of steep hills here in Kentucky, and I hit 35-40 mph on some of the downhills. I don't want to have a blowout when I'm really honking. Thanks for any input you can give. Also, what is a good premium tire brand from Bike Nashbar, or one of the other direct mail companies?

Replace:
when you can see the casing through the tread, some guys, ( NYC messengers) who have a strong good quality tire will wait tilll cords show all the way around the tire but...
when chunks of tread start coming off
when bulges or exposed tube from broken cords happen
when a slice exposes the tube or a lump forms from it
when the rubber starts cracking
if YOU are not comfortablel riding it any more
Rotate when the rear shows a fair amount of wear
Ride till "it" wears out

P.S NO, I'm NOT telling which "it" I'm talkin about...
Usually Premium Road Racing Tires will give you an average of 800-1000 miles of life. For a training bike, use cheaper $7.95 Performance GT2 Kevlar tires, will last about 3,000 miles.
