I am going to have a colonostomy Monday. Tomorrow, in preparation, I have to take all sorts of laxatives to get ready for the test. Yesterday, I was a bit unnerved when the surgery center called me and said: "Don't forget to bring a copy of your Living Will!" What am I getting into here? I don't have any particular problems, but at age 64 I guess it's time for a "roto rooter" job. Besides, it's free. My wife's insurance pays for it all. One more question. Can bike riding cause hemoroids? I seem to have developed one since I've started riding more. Thanks for your input on this delicate question!

Has anyone had a colonostomy?
Affirmative, many moons ago owing to abdominal cramps related to a condition which required use of a muscle-relaxing drug for a short duration. The physician requested that it be done in order to rule “other” possible more serious conditions. I believe it’s a relatively low risk (3% develop complications) however please check this link for a possible reason why you're asked for a living will statement.

Again, a not fun Endoscopic process but I was given a “happy drug” prior and couldn’t have cared less during the procedure.
Been riding several thousand miles a year since without any issues.
You might want to try medical forums for your query…
I don't know if bike riding causes 'roids, but I do know that split seats make it a lot more comfortable to ride with a roid.

Colonostomy or colonoscopy?
HUGE difference!!!
oscopy... They stick a camera up and take a look around.
ostomy... is a rather life altering surgery involving abdomens, intestines, holes and plastic bags that need changing periodically.

ChipR;
Very good catch... I had the camera version! Saw the “get ready for the test” and erroneously assumed it to be an endoscopic exam. Yep the other is decidedly life altering to say the least.
Thanks for being alert and aware.
