I decided my EB needed some attention this week. I ride two pair, one on the road and one on the MTB.

Disassembly - Tools, 2.5mm allen wrench, snap ring pliers. Remove rubber seal on outside of spindle to reveal allen bolt and snap ring. Getting the snap ring out without the proper tool is impossible. I bought $12 snap ring pliers at the local hardware store. Remove the bolt and the pedal comes off the spindle. Remove snap ring to remove the cartridge bearing. There's rubber seal and a copper bushing on the other end of the pedal.

The copper bushing on my MTB pedals required some serious effort to remove as it was dirty and dried up. The road pedal bushings came out fairly easily.

My MTB pedals were disgusting. They were dried out, full of dirt and unable to spin freely. My road pedals were in better shape, but cleaning and lubing (white lithium grease) helped greatly.

A thorough cleaning and lubing brought them back to life, and they now spin like new.

The moral of the story: EBs need some attention like any other component. The good news is that with a allen wrench and a pair of snap ring pliers the job is a piece of cake.

Thanks for the note, Woody! I probably need to give mine some attention.
