I am turning a bmx bike into a track bike for my son.
I'm having problems with the stem. It is a threadless 1" fork. They were cut to fit a short stack height and a low profile bmx stem.I need to fit a road stem on there (short length,high rise),but there isn't much fork left to clamp on as all the road stems need alot of fork to clamp on .HELP

Sheldon uses a seat clamp to 'load' the bearing on this threadless headset:

You can too. And then use a 1" quill stem.

If you don't want to use a seat clamp, I have a fancy clamp from YST that does the same thing. $10.

matt, i've been wanting to go back to my quill track stem and bars ever since i switched from a threaded to a threadless setup. i don't know why i never thought of that, but thanks.

So what Sheldon did was to have a seatclamp take the place of the star-nut/topcap combo to load the bearing. In his case, he left the steerer uncut and HUGE.

Once you have done that(loaded the bearings) you could then cut down the steerer and insert a 1"quill stem into the steerer?

Could the same be done with a 1 1/8 fork/quill stem combo.

YES

And you could use both quill and clamp-one stems at the same time.

And 9/8" quill stems do exist. They were popular for a while on MTBs. They're still in production. I got a nice cro-mo one w/ a front-opening clamp this summer.

And it gets better. YST makes a two-piece clamp. The top piece clamps to the steerer. And the bottom piece, which is threaded into the top piece, is then turned so that the threads push it down onto the top of the threadless bearing 'cone'. It just makes loading the bearing easier than doing it with a seat clamp.

Neophobes and asthetes don't like the looks of it. But those who try them LOVE them.
