Extort may be sandbagging, but I'm sure not sandbagging. On my ride up Baldy, my average speed going up was about 4.8 MPH. I should be able to get that speed up in two weeks, though, now that I have a better clue what's waiting for me at the top of the climb and can meter out my effort accordingly. Maybe even 5.5 MPH (2.5 hours from my parents' house to the ski lifts) may be doable. Just need to cut out 20 minutes somehow... okay, maybe not. We'll see...

I haven't taken any decent rides since the last BF group ride. My frame is busted right where the carbon seatstay joins the titanium chainstay :( . I bought the bike slightly used about a year ago (it's a 2004), so I'm not sure if I'm screwed. It's at a LBS (Lemond dealer) right now. The LBS is on my side, agreeing that it's a defective frame, but the Lemond rep is saying it was due to an impact ---- but the bike has never been involved in an accident or collision since I've owned it. I'm going to the LBS today to try and see what we can do. I don't expect a brand new frame for free, but I'm hoping the Lemond rep will have a change of opinion and a compromise can be reached.
In the meantine, I've got no bike or $$ for a new bike. But keep these threads and rides going OC/Pat! It's just a matter of time before I get things straightened out, get some more mileage under my belt and start doing some nice, long climbs.
That sucks! I hope that it gets worked out so that you have a new bike with little or no money out of your pocket. We will see you on these rides in the future, cause we are worse than the CIA (once in, never out)
As for the 'sandbagging'... I don't train for these events, I rely on the fresh legs theory and my own stubborn nature to get me to the top of the hill. I think I have managed a total of 4 miles on my bike in the last 3 weeks! :( It is because it is so cold out here right now. ;) me = lazy! :D That changes tomorrow when I break out the road bike and push a quality 50-70 mile ride out of my skinny legs.
So do we have a choice of dates yet? I'm hoping for the hilly metric on the 7th and the pie ride on the 28th since I can't make a late December hilly metric (too busy climbing Baldy) and since we'll get slightly more daylight, but I'm cool with whatever.
Let's see what the various posts have to say... ovoleg seems to prefer the 28th, too. my58vw said the 28th would be better for her. No one seems to be strongly hoping for the 7th. Can we safely assume we're aiming for a hilly metric on the 7th and pie on the 28th?

Sounds good to me, that's what I've been planning on.

I guess you really like climbing Baldy. I just climbed it for the first time this morning. The last 3 miles is grueling, it made me miss my triple. Mashing for miles at 50-60rpm in 39-26 sucks. And the descent was so cold.
Okay, I feel better now. Saturday I did Santiago Canyon in a 40 mile loop and completed it in 2:07:38. Same basic path as the BF short ride. Followed that with a 20 mile trip on Sunday wearing the full HAWG camelback (water and shoes/clothes).
Will still need to improve though, I've gotta keep up with OC somehow!
as a measure, what is everyone else completing these types of rides in? 1:30 on a flat course? 2:30 on a hilly course?

Well, it's right behind my parents' house, so it was my target ever since I started cycling in July. I've only climbed it once, but I plan on keeping at it. I find that every time I return to San Diego after some riding on Mt. Baldy, I am faster and more comfortable on my other rides. 50-60 RPM in 39-26, huh? Well, sadly, for me, on my last climb, it was more like ~50 RPM in 30-25 for miles. I can ride faster, but I don't know how much effort I can sustain. Gotta work on it.

40 miles? Flat? Not a clue... I almost never ride relatively flat rides. Modestly hilly? Hmm, maybe 2:40 or so?
I read this last post and I was thinking the same thing...
Mt. Baldy... more around 30-27 for me... I better get a triple...
Actually a goal would be with a 27 on back ride with the standard double or go to a 34 compact...

Over the late summer I did Baldy once or twice a week. I used a compact 50/34 with a 12/27 on back. On the steep stretches, I still had to mash at 50-60 rpm. One of my new goals is to be able to climb Baldy with a standard 53/39 and a 12/27 or 12/25, without thrashing my knees.
39/27 = 1.44
30/21 = 1.43
34/25 = 1.36
30/23 = 1.30
34/27 = 1.26
30/25 = 1.20
So a 34-27 is between a 30-25 and a 30-23. I probably could make it up Baldy with a 34-27, but for now, I'll take every bit of shorter gearing I can get. Hopefully, the day will come when I no longer find much a need for the 30-25, but I'm not sure when that would be. One of my goals for 2006 is climbing Baldy in 2 hours. (Almost an hour faster than my current speed.) It's definitely the most unlikely of my 2006 goals, but I'll give it my best shot. But even at that speed, on the steeper portions, a 30-25 (or 34-27) would be very useful.

That's a very realistic goal if you really work at it. You just need to focus your training on climbing. Do you live near Torrey Pines? Start doing hill repeat intervals. My climbing started improving greatly when I started doing repeats on Newport Coast Drive (Similar hill to Torrey Pines). Start of doing around 3 repeats of the hill riding very hard, recover on your way down. Work it up to where you can climb it 5-7 times in a row. Work on technique (Spinning, breathing, smoothness etc.) Currently my Baldy times are ususually between 90-97 minutes from Mills Rd to the Ski Lifts, this summer I'd like to get down to 80-85 minutes.

Ah, there's the rub. Couch potato turned person who cycles for fun (and otherwise lays on the couch) has to learn to actually train toward a speed-related goal. I plan on working at it.

Yes, I'm really close to Torrey Pines. I live 4 miles from the top of the hill, and my office window overlooks the golf course at the top. Grad student work hours in a top professor's lab suck, but at least our view is good.
Hill repeat intervals on Torrey Pines, huh? I'll keep it in mind. No time this week (too much to wrap up before going "home"), but I'll go at it in 2006.

We are more evenly matched than I thought, I did it in 98 minutes. In the last group ride it took everything I had to keep up with you in Santiago Canyon.

I was pushing it pretty hard myself :) . I'll let you know next time I go out to Baldy (maybe the week after Xmas), a little friendly competition may help both of us get up that climb a little faster.

i thought the julian apple pie ride was set for the 28th?
i'm doing borrego to the sea on the 7th... and i don't do far away sunday rides! so i vote for the 28th! (but i'm still a maybe! cuz all this talk about how fast you all are is going to scare me off!)

It is...We're talking about a warm-up ride on the 7th, and Pico was referring to the 29th of Dec to go do Baldy.
but i'm still a maybe! cuz all this talk about how fast you all are is going to scare me off!
Come! OC Roadie, Pico, and Extort are going to go so much faster than me that if I'm the only one back there, they'll forget that there was someone back there and leave me to be lost in the middle of nowhere.
If it makes you feel better, I have never finished any closed loop route of at least 10 miles with an average speed in excess of 16 MPH.
Sounds like a good idea, keep me posted. I know I'll be free the 29th.
Let me know, too... I'll start an hour ahead of you guys and try my best to stay ahead. Just look for the slow guy in a Discovery jersey riding a Specialized Roubaix. There can't be that many of us on the mountain.
So what is the training ride going to be like?
I know that I am going to do about 60-80 miles on Saturday and then I'll ride most of the day on Monday (80-100) just to start preparing myself for 2006.

Could the organizers of this ride PLEASE organize one in early spring? You'll be rolling right through my front yard, but I'm only up to about 30 miles. Gimme a few months of conditioning and I'll be up to it.
I dunno, sounds like a small group that is going...
I might just sit this one out. I will probably ride myself over a few hills that I have been meaning to conquer.
Anyone ever gone up Winnetka near Taft High School? I am trying that later today, we'll see how I fare.

Ever ride all the way up? It gets REALLY steep toward the top near the beginning of that mountain trail.
I want to try it, I've been a bit pansy at trying anything too steep after my experience with Fargo. I don't want to fall and dismounting is out of the question

How does the grade at Torrey Pines compare to the SD ride coming up. I understand it will be slightly longer.

?.....
OC Exotort and the other guys are probably too fast for me, so it will be a solo ride. I might not want to drive out 1-2 hrs for a solo ride :(
Maybe I can ride out and give socalgurl the look, :fight:
lol j/k :D
On the first ride we kept to the no drop policy. The pack did get split up a couple times but we always regrouped quickly.

with ~6 people, I think the drop policy will be waived lol :D
I"ll try to make it out there for January. I haven't ridden in awhile so I am was nervous
ovoleg, please come. Otherwise, they'll all drop me and I'll be so far back that when they regroup, they'll forget that there's someone back there. :( OC Roadie and Pico climb Baldy in 90-100 minutes. I cut 32 minutes from my climbing time today compared with my climb a month ago, but it still took me 138 minutes. I'll definitely be among the small group bringing up the rear. I just hope the front pack doesn't come to curse the day Extort suggested that I join future group rides.

Torrey Pines is about 6% grade (average) and about a mile long. OC Roadie wasn't suggesting that it would approximate Palomar. He was suggesting I use it for hill intervals to train to improve my Baldy climbing times. Speaking of which, I guess OC Roadie is right... 2 hours shouldn't be that hard. That's only another 18 minutes faster than I climbed it today. I need a goal that makes me work hard, not one that seems readily reachable. (I've been cycling for only 5 months, so I expect I could easily cut out another 18 minutes in the next year.) My goal for 2006 will be 1:45. That requires me to trim another 33 minutes.

If I survive the ride, I'd be happy to arrange another ride along the same route every once in a while.

the training ride is a moderate to difficult route. lots of good hills and some pretty good climbing if you're into that sort of thing. if you're worried about being left behind - don't be. i have a thing about that. if you're part of the group you're part of the group. i'll ride with whoever happens to be at or near the back, it doesn't matter to me. heck, i may even be the slowest guy there.

OK.... i need to climb baldy so i can judge how much slower than you's all that i am! i've only climbed GMR... and it takes me a while! but isn't normally too cold to climb baldy this time of year (ya ya ya .. i know... 80's in the lower areas right now!)

You should challenge yourself more. Try Stunt/Piuma in the MOUNTAINS instead of a bump in the valley.

i'm in for the 28th if indeed that is the agreed upon date. i've done the palomar climb a few times but never the whole route you guys have discussed. i'm not a fast climber but i do OK, i think i've lost about 13 pounds since the last time i've done palomar so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out :D
This is a SAG ride and assuming it is a no drop it should be fun...
I just don't want to take too many people in my car!
Mandy

maybe if I had more time I would...
Trust me, I challenge myself enough.
If I didn't work, I could ride all day and plan trips far away, but I dont...I go to work and school full time. Cycling around my area is the best I get unless it is a weekend(which still depends on how much I have to do around the house and schoolwork.
Thanks for the suggestion, I challenge myself plenty when I have time. Actually, the 6lbs I lost made a huge difference. I usually go up Ventura/Winnetka around 10mph-12mph, today I powered all the way up at 16mph. Of course I almost blew up at the top, but I did smoke that hill :D
I'll be out there for this one. Someone please make a route slip :) I don't want to get lost in the middle of no where

I've been up Torrey Pines once on the Amtrack Century in September and just wanted to have something that many people have ridden to compare the upcoming ride, GRADE wise. By the way it was two weeks to the day after that century that I busted myself up and I'm not even close to the shape I was in at that time.
I'm going to head over to Newport Coast Drive this weekend just to see how bad off I really am.
I do have a 12/27 cassette coming in a week or so to replace the 12/25 on my bike now. Hopefully it will help somewhat.

One of the rest stops would have to be at Dudley's :D (presuming it is still there - haven't been there in 15 years).

I did it in about 1:15 my second time up (from taco shop to coffee shop at the top) at the beginning of last year. I'm shooting for under 1:10 sometime early 2006 as I'm looking to race next year.
If you take your time to enjoy the pace and view, then figure on anywhere from 1:30 - 2:30 depending on your skill fitness level.
It's an awesome climb. If it's your first time up, I strongly suggest you continue to the observatory. It's actually not a big deal, but you'll have bragging rights.
Have fun!

I assume it's still happening, but you're not getting much in the way of responses just because most people are not online much these few days. Not sure about the participants offhand, but it seems like everyone for the 28th plus SDrider.
I'm looking forward to these rides. I just hope I have the mental and physical stamina for the apple pie ride.
