I hated going into "the DEEP end" of the pool. Especially when I lived in arlington. The previous people's maid fell and drowned in there. So its haunted. But now im like screw it. Oh and the pool drain. I dun wana get sucked down there!

I never thought of it as fear, just that I was smart enough not to do stupid things with my friends.

are you brave enough to share, siu? :)

I was always afraid to go into the basement. The big, dark basement. The light switch was down the stairs, in the center of the basement. You had to find the string and pull it to turn on the light. But before you found it you had to walk down the darkened stairway, (holding the handrail) then blindly walk around with your hand in the air until you felt the string. I always thought that as soon as I turned on the light, the boogey man would be there, ready to grab me. I would hear thumping noises before during or after my venture down to the basement. And I had to go there every night because when we moved in, I insisted that my bedroom be built down there.

I was about 10 years old when I found out the neighbor kid knew my bedtime and would knock on the walls at night to scare me. I beat him up and the noises stopped.

Those cracks and shadows in the ceiling of my bedroom that looked like the grim reaper.

I guess they just faded away.

I have a friend who since childhood (in her 50's now) has been afraid of apples. Don't ask me to explain... I don't understand it either.

Me... I don't reall have any fears, many things I have a great respect for... heights, electricity, firearms, etc but no irrational fears.

I AM A DIANETICALLY CHAARGED PERSON!!!

EDIT

When I wasn't thinking about it, I remembered that as a kid I was deathly afraid of Howwy Doody, one of my moms friends had a Howdy Doody puppet for her kid. Whenever I was misbehaving they'd get the puppet and put it on the chair, I would totally bug out in pleas of "I'll be good, please put Doody away!". That and You Are My Sunshine always made me cry, even as a child I found it a very sad song.

Heights.

I took up rock climbing. I'm still afraid of heights if I'm not on a rope, though. Maybe I should try bungee or skydiving, but I'm pretty sure I'd still be afraid of heights. And the thought of either activity gives me the willies. Besides, it's a pretty sensible fear and I think a little fear helps a person maintain a nice, sharp edge.

People. I've had hyper anxiety since I was a kid and have always been 'afraid' of going to any place with a lot of people (especially when they're moving around a lot) like the mall or carnivals. I still get anxiety attacks at places like these, but I've been able to cope better than before.

I am afraid of the ocean. Always have been and probably always will be. Currently I have no other fears that I know of. I used to be afraid of spiders, but when I was about 12, I was backpacking on Michigan's premiere mtb trail, the Potowatomie, a HUGE wolf spider tried to crawl into my mouth while I was sleeping. I smashed it and got green goo all over my hand. Ever since then, spiders have just pissed me off.

Same here....but only when I'm actually trying to flirt, ask-out, etc.... Otherwise, I'm fine.

Heights - Got over that one when at age 14 a friend talked me into getting up on top of wooden swingset, then pushing me off. Incidentally, I got the fear of heights from an incident at about age 4 or 5 when on top of the Tampa Airport parking garage (6 stories), I climbed up on wall and fell....only managed to save myself by grabbing the lightning rod and screaming until my grandfather heard me and came to get me.

Spiders - I haven't got over this one, but I am a little better. I was bitten by a poisonous spider when I was about 8 or 9. I got sick from it. I've had heebee geebees about spiders ever since then.

-Sharks.

As an adult, I noticed that when they see you, they tend to run away (we both ran in opposite directions, heh). The next step was to fight with a couple that were trying to steal my fish, and having them stalk me for about 300m while trying to reach the shore. Still get a momentary panic once in a while when diving at night or alone in deep water.

-Being in the Hawaiian forests alone at night. Still working on that one.

I forgot to mention burning to death too......I've been petrified of it ever since I was really young when I had two cousins who burned to death. Ironic that I was such a little pyromaniac as a kid, eh?

I can still remember that, when I was four years old, I would keep my hands under the covers at night. I was afraid that the devil would get them. I don't know where that came from, but my extended family was very big on scaring children. I doubt that I could go in my Aunt Lizzie's attic to this day without thinking about the "boogie man" that she used to tell us lived up there.

I remember the first night that I realized how silly my fear was and left my hands on top of the covers. I was no more than four years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I was so proud of myself.

Heights, but only when there is no railing or something to hang on... I get vertigo when that happens. However, if I'm in a plane or on a ski lift, it's not there. It's only when there is a ledge with nothing to grab. Very disconcerting.

The vertigo even kicks in when there is such a situation in a movie. Example... Watching Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers (or it might have been Return of the King), there is a scene where Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are scaling a massive pass into Mordor. The overhead shots of the scene completely gave me vertigo and I could barely watch the screen. Quite freaky.

Can't believe it hasn't been included here yet: Being Buried Alive.

Laying on your back in that coffin, pressing up on the lid and feeling the impassive weight of all that earth pressing back down, not enough room to sit up even a little, the sides so close you couldn't move your elbows away from your sides, your head pressed against the top and your feet touching the bottom, the air getting warmer, and thinner, and knowing that your screams are too muffled to be heard by the people passing above, and then you know that they've left, and only the wind and dry leaves are left to skitter across the ground above you.

You know, not that I think about it…

Number one fear I had was Dracula. That all ended when I snuck into the living room one night. My dad feel asleep while watching cable TV. I sat there and watched Alien. I was busted as the credits started rolling. Parents were freaked thinking I was going to have nightmares. I debunked their thoughts when I started laughing and imitating the alien.

Second place fear - being alone in the woods. I was afraid of seeing Bigfoot or something. Don't have that problem anymore.

Third place fear (still have it) - being alone in a dark church. That still creeps me out.

Was afraid of electrical storms as a youngster, not thunder sounds but the flash of light in my room while sleeping at night, but not during the daytime. Not afraid of it anymore, but I guess you could say I am hypervigilant about it.

Its called Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. The packs/troops I was in growning up were all sponsored by Churches. My dad was the Cubmaster/Scoutmaster. This meant that I was the first to get there, and the last to leave. I was always the one sent to make sure all lights were off, and that no one got left behind.

You would think that being in "The Lord's house" would make you feel safe, but it was scarier than any Haunted House I've ever been to.

If you'd told me that before, I might not have believed......but now I have to consider the possiblity.

BEING EATEN ALIVE BY SOME WILD ANIMAL - sharks in particular. Must've been from that Jaws movie, I wouldn't take a bath for weeks, my mom was threatening to hose me off outside for all the neighbors to see. I'm still a little uneasy when surfing or diving. But I kinda made my peace with sharks by swimming with some reef-sharks in Morea. They were actually very cute with big smiles on their faces, wish I brought my underwater camera.

HEIGHTS - got over that by jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. Although it might be more of a fear of falling uncontrollably, which may lead to...

PAINFUL DEATH - guess there's no way around it really. Hopefully it'll be quick. In the meantime, I'll make the most of life!

Yup, used to be super paranoid of bears too, until I saw some in the woods & they took off running. Of course, those were wussie black bears. Point is, I no longer expect them to tear into the tent at night.
