okay, I'm looking for (doesn't have to meet all criteria, just one or a couple)

-futuristic stuff, minority report-ish, blade runner-ish, philip k. dick-ish, gibson-ish

-very japan-centric

-gov't stuff, conspiracies, etc. is good

any suggestions appreciated, I don't know much about Anime--so, if there are a few "must see" films, please list them as well

WTF, kris!?! I was gonna post that. Well, not the image, but, still.... Keep in mind, that is my favorite movie of all time, not just anime/animation, but out of every movie I've ever seen. Fantastic story! Plus, it's futuristic if you go back to pre-feudal era Japan, Zig.;)

Okay, enough of that. Have you seen Akira, um, Ghost In The Shell, or the (unfinished)Debiruman series? That's all I could come up with off the top of my head, being sleep-deprived and whatnot.

They’re not futuristic but the style of graphic art is the same in these two classics by Hayao Miyazaki…

Spirited Away – best movie released (US) in 2002 – notice my avatar – it’s based on a character from the film.

Howl’s Moving Castle – will probably rank in the top five of 2005

Akira is a definite must-see. It meets all your criteria:

-futuristic stuff, minority report-ish, blade runner-ish, philip k. dick-ish, gibson-ish, -very japan-centric, -gov't stuff, conspiracies, etc.
I love Akira so much, that's what I named my dog. Great score by Geinoh Yamashirogumi. You should try to read the original GN also. Good stuff.

Yes AKIRA is classic, but I have always had a hard time watching the entire film. The opening sequence however, is mindblowing.

It might not technically be Anime as it was more orientated to kids, but did anyone ever see 'Starblazers'? I saw it in the late '70's when I was a young 'un. It went for 30 episodes or something. It fits some of Zigs criteria.

I loved that show growing up! Good stuff! Not sure how I'd like it now, but I always looked forward to it after school years ago....

progress report:

Ghost in the Shell - okay

Akira - agreed, the first 10-15 mins are great, the rest of the film is okay, and the last 40 mins drag quite a bit

Spirited Away - Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, I think I'm a fan--loved this!

Princess Mononoke - Great so far, not finished

I'll be renting Ninja Scroll, Wings of Honnemaise and some more Miyazaki stuff soon

Doesn't meet any of the criteria, but I always heard Vampire Hunter D was kind freaky

And you can't go wrong with and episode or two of Speed Racer ;)
