Bicycling magazine recently had an article on flying with bicycles and the prices. They also had some good pointers on how to pack a bicycle. I believe it was around $50 to fly it with you so I imagine it would be around the same price to ship it.

cane,
I had a bike packed and shipped from Ca to Tx and
it was about $70 for both If your parents pack it
should cut cost by about $25
You can ship UPS ground it doesn't take all that long
and is much cheaper

In August I shipped a bike from Charlottesville, Va. to SF, Ca for about $63.00, which included $300 insurance. The best price was FedEx ground, which beat UPS by about $5 if memory serves.

I got a box from a bike shop and basically followed the instructions in Buycycling, referenced above. Once you have weight and dimensions, you can go to the Mail Boxes, Etc. (http://www.mbe.com) site to get shipping costs for various types of shipping.

FWIW, they told me that UPS and FedEx are pretty much equivalent for care in handling, but both are much better that the USPS (sorry, Lance).

I just shipped a bike by UPS for $43. It seems strange but I found out that the price was cheaper to have UPS pick the box up at my house than for me to drop it off at a depot. Origianlly, I took the boxed bike to one of those independent shipping places, like mailboxes etc., and they quoted me a price of $75.
