BMX - It's been a little more than a week and already busted the rear wheel.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Which means time to purchase a triple walled rear wheel, which that and some other parts have been installed. Got a supra E on the back now.

how did you break the other one? Any pics of that? And what wheel was it?

What's it like to break a wheel, does it make you crash?

Alex G-22 on a formula hub. Landed wrong on it. No pics, left camera at home since I don't wear the camel back like I do when on the Kona.

I'm physically fit, the old rear was a single wall, and it was likely my fault after thinking about it I think I had a bit too much air in the wheel. I did go down.
Welcome to BMX! I was never a fan of Alex wheels or Formula hubs. Bet is was a pain setting up the Evolver on the seat stays.

It wasn't too bad actually. They are easily the best U brakes I have ever used.
odyssey makes some good rims if you taco this one.
besides alex does anyone else make tripple walled rims?

Did you break the rim or put a flat spot in it? what?
my guess from the picture is that he bent the s-word out of it

It looked like a cracked Pringle.

Supra Es are a waste of money. Just cause you messed up a single wall doens't mean you go to a 30oz trippple wall...I bet you would have been fine with Hula Hoops, or Midways. But, that's out of the question now that you've already purchased your rim. Good luck with it, I hope it works out.

the chrome started bubbling and peeling off on one side of my hula hoop

I was just refering to the strength of it(that it would be strong enough), but that is exactly why I prefer Odyssey rims; they have a warranty on all their rims chrome plating.

The weight really doesn't bother me, considering that on my mtb I went through a set of Atom Labs Trail Pimps. I'm fit, but am really hard on wheels due to me being a bit more aggressive on the bike. I'd likely go through Hula Hoops or Midways quickly.
I'd likely go through Hula Hoops ... quickly.
majorly doubt that

Actually the Hula Hoops look nice, might just have a set of them built up in the future.

Sure. I think that you need to stop eating at McDonald's and stop stacking and casing.

that's the new, not messed up wheel in the picture.

Supra Es are way overkill if all you did was jack up a single-wall. Build your wheels right using proper tools (read: tensiometer, spoke prep) and any of the stronger double-walled, eyeletted rims should work fine.

What part of physically fit don't you understand. No fast food for me at all, never liked it and if I go out any where I'll either have broiled salmon or some other form of broiled seafood. I did case the landing, 1st casing with the bike. I have also admitted that I screwed up and screwed up hard at that.

Don't even get me started. My last job was as a wheel builder, and happen to be really good at it.
Kona, the boys in BMX are not much different than SS/Fixie. Don't take it personally.
Go easy on me here. But why if weight isn't much of a concern don't guys trashing wheels use somethink like the Skyway Tuff Wheel.

I'm not saying to use THE skyway wheel. But couldn't something like it hold up well? They can only laugh if they're better than you right?

Tuff Wheels?
[goes looking for Nomex suit to loan Darin]
Hey, I'm not out to win any popularity contest. :)
But in the debate over why not to use them, what is the practical side?
theres an entire thread on why not to use them somewhere...whether or not i agree with it im not sure.

You mean the poor strength/weight ratio? Tuff Wheels are heavy and not very strong.
Well, that would explain it then. They look strong anyway? What about Z rims? Also not strong I assume.
Z Rims were designed to bend back into shape. That's kind of a big design flaw, don't you think? Better to make a wheel that doesn't bend out of shape.

they are made of plastic

Here's a crazy stretch. A Framing Square made of Alum, made to flex, will hold up better on the job because it will bend, but bend back into shape. Steel farming squares will bend, and stay bent. That being said, I suppose a plastic wheel that allows itself to bend could bend too much and damage the spoke if there is ALOT of lateral force on the wheel.
Are you convinced that what's popular is popular because it's the best thing going? Do you think that there will be an improvment to wheels and what will it be? Materials? Construction?
Would a framing square that doesn't bend at all be the ideal tool?

If it where light, yes. You got something in mind?

Spoked wheels already *do* flex. They're supposed to, or else they would explode. Mags, discs, framing squares...all these designs rely on materials under compression, so they are very heavy and not very strong. Traditional spoked wheels rely on very light materials that are weak under compression, but incredibly strong under tension.
Wheels usually blow up for lack of proper construction and maintenance, inadequate tire pressure, and from generally riding like a sketchball.
