i currently ride assos airblock tights, and i am in need of a jacket. i ride in burlington, vt throughout the winter, with a month in new jersey while im not in school.

should i go with the matching assos airjack jacket, the cannondale thermal jacket, or the craft Gore Wind Stop Control Jacket?

I would decide on the most expensive of the three. Then go on the internet or make some phone calls and find out who has the highest price. Buy from whoever has the highest price then you will know you have the best jacket money can buy.

your logic sounds quite flawed. i can get atleast 20% off all jackets, cause i race for a team.

assos: 279
cannondale: 200
craft: 229

Oh come now, then someone will post an even more expensive jacket, then where will he be? :p

Seriously, I don't have a 'winter jacket'. I just use a lightweight, fairly breathable, fairly water resistant wind jacket like the one I got earlier this month from J&G (http://www.bicycleclothing.com/Wind-Jackets.html) and add wool layers underneath as necessary for the weather.

1. Under Armour Cold Gear Mock Shirt
2. Moisture Wick Sweatshirt
3. Marmott Ski shell fleece lined
4. Performance Illumilite Jacket

layered in that order. I believe there is NO one jacket

Base, mid, thin, water-proof shell--that's all you need for anything down to 0 degrees.

Cheers

I got a snowboarding jacket, sherpa wool (or something like that) lining. Very warm, wind proof and the liner wicks away moisture quickly. Its a 3-in-1 jacket, all I need to do is put on my base layer throw on my jacket and off I go.

For nasty weather I wear a Gill OS2J "Key West" jacket. While Gill makes cycling gear, this is actually a sailing jacket. It is uninsulated, with a heavy nylon fabric and a "Gill-Tex" coating.

It has a couple of nice features. First, you can really seal it up to keep you dry if it's raining. It has a very high, fleece-lined collar with chin flap, which reaches all the way to the edge of my helmet in the back and covers most of my face. It has reflectors sewn in to the sleeves, shoulder and front. Unlike most cycling jackets it has ample pockets, and fleece-lined handwarming pockets.

Dislikes: no reflectors on the back, it came with a useless hood that I cut off, and it's too warm above about 45F.

I think like all good products it is being discontinued, I've seen them on clearance for about $170.

The Assos Airjack 851 is very good, but if you can swing it, their fuguJack is pretty impressive as well. I borrowed my (disgustingly wealthy) friend's a few weeks ago, and actually had to take off a layer underneath. I then made the mistake of checking around the net for prices, and something just - and I mean just - short of $600  , I ran away from the keyboard screaming  .
