In no particular order, and I probably forgot a couple. But "The Thing" really IS no.1
1.John Carpenter's The Thing (http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~vampire/thing/thing.htm)This movie pwns all other horror movies. They don't do special effects like this any more, and it looks better than any CGI crap I've ever seen.
2. Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/) This movie pwns all other sci fi movies. It helps to be a classic Star Trek fan, but is by no means necessary.
3.Robocop (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093870/) Used to be considered sci fi, but now we're living in the exact same future it predicts...
4.Natural Born Killers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110632/) Like doing a 2-hour line of coke. Brilliant.
5.Pulp Fiction (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110912/) The "Easy Rider" of Generation X.
6.True Romance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108399/) Yes, this is by the same gooch who did the extremely homoerotic "Top Gun." Check out my favorite actor, Gary Oldman, as a black pimp(!)
7.Goodfellas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/) The perfect movie. I could watch it once a day.
8.Magnolia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0175880/) Emotionally grueling, but wonderful, if you like his films.
9.Rushmore (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128445/) Probably his best. His others have charm, but aren't as completely realized as this.
10.Ninja Scroll (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000B1OE7/002-2265595-4476020?v=glance&n=130)Best anime ever.

I just brought the collectors edition of Pulp Fiction today for $12 Aus, which is like 35c US. It's got a shiessen load of extras. Yay for me.
I thought True Romance was really weird when I saw it but in hindsight I was drunk and on drugs at the time. Might have to revisit it.

How could you......how could you possibly choose a movie that starred William Shatner in your top 10 movie list? You are sick....sick I tell you!!!
BTW....(4) and (5) would surely be in my list too.
You have my condolences, Kris.

Rushmore is a wonder, but The Royal Tenebaums seems to grow each time I see it. Has such a cast of A-Listers ever seemed to give themselves over to a Writer/Director in such a trusting way?
Too bad The Life Aquatic was such a step backwards...

You're bannanas......I can't speak for Rushmore because I haven't seen that one yet. But Life Aquatic was even better than Royal Tannenbaums.

Glad to see Magnolia and Rushmore among your favorites. Wes Anderson and P.T. Anderson (no relation) are two of the best directors working today. Easily my two favorite directors, please tell me you've seen Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Royal Tenenbaums and Bottle Rocket.
INT. GROVE CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL. NIGHT
The school auditorium . Max is onstage dressed as a South Central lowrider called Little Juan. He is opposite a senior named 40 OUNCE and Margaret Yang, who plays Blue Eyes. While they are rehearsing the scene a MESSENGER comes in with an envelope for Max.
LITTLE JUAN
The killing has got to stop, essay. It's getting too loco. No more gats.

### you're the crazy one. Motherf**kers be wanting to kill you. Are you talking about getting rid of your gun?
LITTLE JUAN
It's time, homey.

BTW... the soundtrack to Rushmore is amazing. It rocks, it pops, it jazzes, it interludes... it's d*mn near perfect.
As for Punch Drunk Love... that movie was a little disturbing (which was most likely intended, huh?). Sandler is so..... un-Sandler in his melancholy and anger, yet so Sandler in his melancholy and anger. Did that statement make any sense?

Punch Drunk Love took me a couple of viewings, I think P.T. Anderson said he was in a mood when he made it, his father had passed and I believe one or two friends/or/aquaintences had died.
I still need to buy Sydney (Hard Eight), his first film, and finish up my Wes Anderson collection with Bottle Rocket (lol, Futureman) and The Life Aquatic.
Be warned, Hard Eight is nowhere near as good as P.T. Anderson's later films, he doesn't even completely consider it his own really, I think the studio had final cut and botched it.
Kris - I'm with you on The Thing, I guess it sort of makes up for Escape From New York. I'd also put at least one if not all of the George Romero 'Dead' movies on the list, Romero put the zombie genre on the map forever with Night of the Living Dead.

Pink Flamingo's
Repo Man
Bladerunner
Liquid Sky
???????
Randya...why anti-Escape from New York ??
Great B Sci-Fi !
I'm down with Bladerunner, too.
EFNY got a screening at the Portland Mercury's 'Prozac Film Festival' last year, they encourage the audience to participate in the movie, yelling out fake dialog and other stuff. I never realized how thoroughly corny EFNY was until that day. :)

^^^ Oh, Ok.
How about 'Run Lola Run' ???
Relative to movies that encourage audience participation, Nepolean Dynomite
is one of my all time favorite movies. I dont think too many people get it
cuz you need to see it twice, but if you do see it 2wice you will have an
ephiphany !! :roflmao: It is one of those movies that I can watch any time.

Natural Born Killers
What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
The Lord of the Rings (all 3 as one movie)
Kill Bill
Pulp Fiction
Gandhi
Amadeus
The Terminator (just the original, not sequels)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Blazing Saddles
Monty Python's Meaning of Life

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Pale Rider
Cape Fear (DeNiro version, not original)
An Affair To Remember

Ok....those are 1st set of movies that come to mind. I'd have to think harder for more and work to slice it down to the top ten.

The Outlaw Josey Wales
That's a classic. One of my favorites too.
I just can't get enough of the "screwed over ridiculously hard and then heading out with nothing to lose for revenge" type movies.

http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/images2/theylive1112.jpgCuz with many of these directors I like, I kinda made myself choose just one of theirs. Same with the two Andersons mentioned earlier, I've seen and enjoyed all their films, but tried to narrow it down to one per film-maker. This thread is of course making me realize I forgot a few. Kick @ss and chew bubblegum, indeed.

I forgot about:
Bladerunner-Seriously, all the stuff they raved about for Gladiator, he'd already done 20 years previous.
Brazil-Terry Gilliam at his finest.
Unforgiven-Clint Eastwood is like Wolverine, the best he is at what he does.
LOTR trilogy-Good lord, peter Jackson is cool, been a fan since "Meet the Feebles," but this goes beyond standard Hollywood fare in so many ways. I was a big Tolkien fan in my youth, so all the lore and such is really enjoyable for me. After seeing King Kong, I now realize that Andy Serkis is incredibly cool, too.
Aliens-Bill Paxton, nuff said.
Cape Fear(DeNiro)-"Counselor, 's that you?"

If only they would re-release the extended LOTRs with Arwen cut out of all but the first scenes in Rivendel. Basically, she would be cut from the 2nd 2 films.
After seeing Aliens on the big screen, I had thought it the better film. Revisting both Alien and Aliens this year, I think Alien is definitely the better film, much more refined and suspenseful.

Brazil-Terry Gilliam at his finest.
This has been on my "to see" list for quite some time. It's VERY highly rated, and Gilliam is one of my favorite directors. It's just that its rare enough to never be in a video store.

Hmm, I've never really thought about my favorite movies, like a top-ten or anything, but here's a few:
Ninja Scroll-First on the list because it's my favorite. Yes, it's anime, but it really speaks to me.
The Wild Bunch-Second just because it happened to come to mind after Ninja Scroll...great western.
Pulp Fiction-Big fan of Bruce Willis and it's just a cool movie, c'mon!
Bladerunner-Great film! Futuristic Noir or whatever it's called.
True Romance-My brother's ex-gf loved this movie and, after watching it many times with them, I can see why. I really like the scene with Hopper and Walken....
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly-Maybe my 2nd favorite movie. The score is awesome!
Friday-Tucker and Ice Cube are funny as hell in this! Lots of great characters.
Alien-Saw it at a drive-in when I was a little kid. Scary freakin' movie!
Swamp Thing-Probably have to reconsider this if I saw it now, but at the time I thought it was pretty darn cool. Mmm, Adrienne Barbeau.:D Of course that reminds me of Sealab 2021. Comic book's better than the movie, naturally....
Fight Club-****ed up!...in a good way.
The Matrix-Haven't seen the last two, but this was(kinda like Fight Club) nearly a religious experience.
Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead-Great characters in ****ed up situations.
Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI-Probably favorites out of sentimentality(and repeated viewing) more than anything else, but I love 'em!
JAWS-Had me scared from the very beginning. Great score, too. Very simple music for the shark, but it works very well.
That's all I could come up with off the top of my head. Definitely a fan of most of the films on Kris' list, but not all fall within the realm of "favorite" for me. Star Trek II, Rushmore and Robocop might be in there somewhere. Kirk yelling, "KAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!" and the ear-slug thingies are fond memories. Rushmore's just great start to finish, in my opinion. I love to say, "I'd buy that for a dollar!", too.
This has been on my "to see" list for quite some time. It's VERY highly rated, and Gilliam is one of my favorite directors. It's just that its rare enough to never be in a video store.
Do what I did: Buy it! If you don't like it, which is possible...but not probable, give it to someone else or sell it.
