I just picked up a new to me Schwinn Suburban. First of all, I would like to know how to determine what year it is. Secondly, it has a light generator that I haven't been able to get working and possibly can't get it working. Are those things replace-able? Fixable?

there are quite a few pix available here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7201941727&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

What is the best thing to use to shine the crome up? I had heard kerosene works well, any other suggestions?

Love the board, I'm sure I'll be using it frequently to hlep me through this rehab!

Hi!

I have a 1974 Schwinn Suburban that is the exact color as yours....opaque blue. And, I have some resources for you. First, get on the

www.schwinn.com

site. Click on bicycles, then heritage, and try asking your questions on the collector's forum and the restoration forum. Those guys have a wealth of info. Some of them are absolutely amazing!

Second, for your dating, on that bike, you will need to use the serial number. Check the
www.bunchobikes.com/serialnumber.htm

site.

And, third, for an amazing amount of data on Schwinn's, check out Bob Hufford's

Schwinn Lightweight Data Book. Just do a google search for that.

Hope this helps!

Here's the link to the SLDB:

It's probably easier to replace those generators that repair them. The problem could be as simple as a bad ground or faulty wiring though. If you have a local bike co-op or used bike shop, they may have a box full of them. You should be able to get a used replacement very cheap.

If your LBS does happen to have a box of old dynamos, make sure you get a Union brand; anything else is crap.
