I just ordered a set of SKS Commuter (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=109&subcategory=1124&brand=&sku=14007&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=) fenders from Nashbar, thinking they were the standard SKS (http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=11531880&parent_category_rn=4500787) fender.

Has anyone compared these? Are there significant differences in functionality, weight, mounting ease, etc? Since I wanted to regular P35 model, I may send the commuters back, unless I learn they're better in some way, or at least no worse.

Thanks!

Jack

Looks like the attachment system is different - simpler? which would it more challanging to adjust the fenders since there are not as many support points. I have P35s myself and i don't see these commuters (based on the pic) working out as well.

Unlike the "Chromoplastics", they don't have an aluminum layer, so they might be a little less durable in the long run. Hey. They're cheap though.

Looks like they also have built-in mudguards. I run both SKS and Freddys on my bikes;both seem equally as durable,so I wouldn't sweat it if they fit ok.

Riding with one of those slung across your back would certainly equalize things between you and the cagers.

The mudflaps are inadequate in size, but better than the ones on the Freddys.

OBTW,I did not get that link from Google. Couldn't find jack on Google for some reason. Link came from digging out the instructions that came with the fenders.

SKS and P35 in a post that has nothing to do with firearms?

Thanks for looking that up! I don't find any mention or picture of the Commuter model on that site. I wonder if it's been discontinued.

I'm not even sure what the commuter model is, I just ordered ones that fit a 700c x 28mm tire. Got 'em, too.

I'm confused by the little black plastic attachment pieces are for, though. I put both of them on the front fender, but in the pictures in this thread they have one on each fender, on the drive side. Anyone got a clue what their function is?

Those REALLY look like Zefals, and the hardware is also very Zefal-ly....

I would NOT put it past Crashbar to miscategorize, or get a manufacturer mixed up on listings......I honestly do not think those are SKS but rather Zefals.

Oh, and the black clips are quick release clips, one on each front fender strut, one on each drive side is just idiotic( but you can't expect product photogs to know their stuff about technical things....i see heinous discrepancies on mountaineering websites.)

So I got it right? Woohooo! I thought they were quick-release-ish, but couldn't reconcile it with the one-per-fender pics.

I got the SKS Commuters yesterday. They are indeed SKS. And they are a plastic/metal/plastic laminate. Whether it's the same laminiate as the P35s, I don't know, but I expect it is. The obvious differences are the attachment struts themselves and the mudflaps. Beyond that, I think they are shorter, i.e., cover less of each wheel's circumference, than the P35s. This is just my impression from comparison w/ pics on the web. The hardware looks to be a bit different as well.

I'm still undecided on whether I'll keep them. Seems like they'll be significantly less rigid, and also less dry if they are indeed shorter.

those struts and attachments threw me, I didn't know that type of stuff wasn't proprietary...

i got two sets and promptly killed both rears with two sticks (me and the gf both killed the back one). i can verfiy hey have no mental insrt as the both broke clear in two.

they seemed nice, but durability in the back is definitely suspect. the front ones have a saftey release which has already saved my gf's fender once.

they do seem quality and have NICE stainless steel mounting hardware but for me at least the rear fenders didn't last long. i must say i destroy fenders pretty often so these were not extraordinarily flimsy. we just got tough sticks around here i guess...

Actually,it was REI that had them wrong. And yeah, they're SKS.

On both bikes I've mounted SKS's on,I've had to leave the safety clips off the front. The forks were curved in a way that they wouldn't mount right. Go figure.
