Advocacy & Safety - Post your Vids and Pics of Bad Drivers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is the spot to post any vids/pics of roadragers, buzzers, boozers, and of course the clueless.
Here's the vid of my recent incident, it's a little less than 15 Meg.

This link will take you to a page where you must scroll down, and pick the "free" column, that will take you to a d/l page. Scroll down again, wait for the countdown, and then you have to do a verify of a gif (ya know where they put a few letters that you must type into a submission box) Basically it's a bit of a PITA, but it works. I just downloaded my file.
It's a decent enough place to upload large files for free, but as usual, if you don't upgrade to the pay premium, you have to deal with ads, and middle pages.

If using VirtualDub and compressing ATC-1000 video, what have you found to be the best codec (and which exact version) to use and with what settings to get the best quality/size ratio (i.e. small but still watchable?)

I haven't the slightest.
I use VirtualDub just to edit out a section, then save it as AVI, then another freeware program called TEMPEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/) to switch it to an mpeg1 (VideoCD) and there I chose the output resolution as 320 X 240 which takes it down even further.
But the quality still looks good.

That is a pretty obvious incident, but I'm guessing no law was broken. Cool you caught it on tape. Did you get his plates?

That is pretty funny, and kind of "says it all" I think.
Two summers ago, I was riding Thoreau street in Concord, MA. This is very popular riding country, as most area cyclists know. Traffic was light, the road mostly empty. This woman in a volvo wagon buzzes me, far closer than she needed to be. She lays on the horn, and gives me the classic death look. So, what was funny? The "Give peace a chance" bumper sticker. Ahh, but of course.
I love riding through Concord. Smell those trust funds!
:D
What is he saying during all that? Did he get out and try to fight you? Do you carry mace?
Bikepacker67

I carry a knife - for purely utilitarian reasons, ya understand.... Whittling, digging out peanut butter, pulling out slivers, dealing with a-holes. :D
And it's ME that you hear on the video.
As I approach the van, you hear me say "You had a whole other lane over there. you had a whole other lane over there to pass me... why did you pass so close?"
Then when he was trying to drive me off the road you hear me say "You better not f'n hit me!"

Ohh one other thing you hear me saying (right before I say "You better not f'n hit me") is his license plate number. To tell ya the truth, I'd forgotten about the camera running, given that this is about 5 miles into my commute (and the camera is new) - On the raw footage (the whole 40 mins) the last thing you see is me pulling up to the hardware store, then looking down and seeing the video still running, and saying "YES"!

Thankfully I have no videos of bad drivers and hopefully will have none for a while. This week traffic has been unusually light and subdued. Probably fewer people commuting and also I've been doing my PM commute at 3pm instead of 5pm which makes a huge difference. So I present a snippet of everyday video of how things should be. ;)

I do pass by a couple of shopping centers which are busier than usual with the holidays. But the real limiting factor for video from the ATC-1000 is that most of my commute is in darkness, even with 10 hours of daylight today. So video may have to wait until the spring.

I left 20min later (at 7:10a) than normal this morning just so there would be enough light to make a video. ;)
I recorded the AM commute yesterday too, but starting at 6:50a and it was all blackness up until the last 10min when the sun was nearly up. Its also why I've been leaving at 3pm instead of 5pm.
I'll still record even if mostly blackness as you can still see the streaks of tailights and road signs that glow from my headlight. I erase them anyway.
I guess it is extra wear and tear - honestly I wonder how long the camera will last mounted directly on the bike given the shock and vibration it gets. I'll switch to helmet mount soon I think.

Another close pass. Again, not crazy close like a buzz, but unneccessary as they had lots of room to their left. I was riding on white line.

I've not gotten it to play in Media Player or anything unless the drivers from the ATC1000 are loaded, or in QuickTime player. I have tried 3 different motion JPEG codecs. When I find a standalone codec that is free and works, I'll post an announcement.

It might be the angle of the video but it looks to me in the second video you are riding the white line. Pick a lane. You shouldn't ride the white line in any type of vehicle; car, bike or other. The guy in the truck needs to learn to pull a trailer, he was way to close.

Yeah, I hear ya, but if you note the driver had their right turn signal on (I saw it in my rear veiw mirror) and I didn't know if he was turning at the first turn (at the bus pull out) or the 2nd where he did. So I kept the line so he wouldn't be as likely to right hook at the first turn (and moved a bit right as he passed)
Also any considerate driver could have moved left when they passed. There were no other cars in the left lane for a good period of time. But for me this was not a dangerous close pass, just typical and less than the 3ft required by law.
Finally I tend to ignore the bike lane stripe and instead ride a safe distance from the curb. It would be far better if the stripe wasn't there at all.
Al
If they are going to put in bike lanes it would be nice if they were wide enough to be used safetly. Have the same problem with bike lanes in Mesa.

Well this ones in Tempe, right near Mesa. The bike lane is not substandard width, I don't believe. I don't think by riding on or just inside the line is abnormal, most other 'fast' cyclists I see in the valley do this as well. This is Guadalupe just west of the 101 - one of the most popular roads in the east valley for cyclists on weekends. A good bike lane and wide travel lanes.
Al
I know the area well. I have always felt the bike lanes here a little narrow for my taste, since most of the roads are 45 mph and people drive 50 - 60 mph on them.

Agreed. I'm tired of motorists pointing out where the bike lane stripe is painted, as if I hadn't noticed. And there's never enough time to explain things like wet leaves, visibility, doors, right hooks, etc.

I suppose I could have gotten into a fistfight with him in the middle of Allen Street - been arrested in about 5 mins - Then I guess I could use my one call to ring my boss to tell him I won't be able to open.

wow -- just watching your vid got my adrenaline flowing, bikepacker. can't say i would have been able to do things any differently, and you definitely handled him getting out of the car the right way -- just keep on going!

Bah your a cyclist use what you use best (your legs and feet) A nice carboon fiber reencforced foot to the face while still on the bike at speed = no muss no fuss. :)
In all seriousness though best to avoid if you can.
