Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - neoprene socks

i just ordered these from cabela's after thawing my toes out post prospect park.

i usually do smartwool and tonight i even put plastic bags over my feet, but damn my toes are frozen right now. i did a forum search and didn't come up with much on this. anyone use them, and if so, what do you wear under them? cotton? wool?

sealskinz...rei sells them for about $33 a pair. they make gloves too.

i wear thorlo lightweight skiing socks all the time in the winter. sometimes under performance brand water resistant socks, then my shoes, then neoprene booties (if it's really cold, which it never is in seattle).

a second on the sealskinz. more waterproof than the regular neoprene. got mine a little bigger than norm and have plenty of sock room inside. that, and a shoe a half size larger than my norm for winter riding. and then the neoprene outershoe booties for when things are getting really ugly.

thin smartwools over a pair of poly pro liner bike socks first, then the other stuff as conditions warrant.

2 pairs of socks + plastic bags

those sealskinz look nice. kinda spendy though. i suppose you can't put a price on having all ten toes.

Tommorrow will be woolies, baggies, Lake MXZ, baggie, neoprene booties, baggie and wind shell.

Sealskinz aren't waterproof for more than an hour or two of hard work when it's real wet out. Neoprene isn't waterproof really at all, just doesn't water log and insulates well, but not alone. Decent wool beneath neoprene socks with a good seal at the ankle is excellent, but to really work you have to be able to fit it all in your shoe and still have plenty of room to move all of your toes. Then it works all day long, your feet are moist but it isn't noticeable because they'll not get sopping wet with wool against the skin and neoprene above the wool.

I normally wear a 43 or so but in th ewinter it's 45 :)

I used to use a pair or two(depending upon how thick)wool socks under gore-tex oversocks. Not completely waterproof for all day rain, but would still keep you pretty warm .

I rock neoprenes socks with wool or lycra/poly underneath. I wear sandals so size isn't an issue and I can put as many layers down as I need. I find half the problem is that my regular shoes are tight enought they impair circulation.

No, not wet, cold. Tight shoes cuts off the circulation ergo toes get cold, sandals don't fit as snugly. If my feet do get wet, whether from external water or sweat, neoprene traps warm water the same way a wetsuit does. My feet are way warmer in neoprene socks and sandals than leather shoes and any other layer system. Putting a second neoprene booty overtop it all is almost too warm.

i have sealskinz. ditto on what Sam said. they're waterproof enough for an hour, but not at all for more than that. but they are toasty warm.

i had the burley shoe covers but they have no holes for cleats- boo. i think if i get despirate i'll cut them, but they're far more useful as waterproof covers than as an insulating layer- they're really super thin nylon.

my toes always get super cold. sometimes i resort to those little chemical heatey pads that i stick in my shoes, but then i spend the whole ride thinking about how toxic those things are.

i really have no good solution. hence, rollers.
