BMX - 24" Subversion

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thinking about getting a 24" cruiser frame, chucking on a big chainwheel, long seatpost, bullhorns track hub and skinny tyres to make a nice diminutive fixed city bike. I'm sure this is sacrelege to some of you but hey. I have a question if anyone knows. What are the smallest slicks you can get for the 24" size. As far as I can tell there are two different 24" sizes and am not sure the Panaracer slicks I've seen would be something that would work. Anyone got any ideas?
Have a look at my 406 wheeled Raleigh folder. Not a BMX but the wheels are and it's a blast!
Thanks in advance.
:)
Funny, I know nothing about 24" tires, other than those used for racing. I got a spare 400mm post so I can ride my cruiser to work, but it just chews up the tires.

Nice work on the Raleigh, when I get some cash I'm defo getting a Moulton.

not sure if you've seen this before but a friend recently got one of these:
Redline Flight Monocog (http://www.redlinebicycles.com/adultbikes/flight-monocog.html)
a fixed hub and handlebars makes this pretty close to what you're describing. it's 26 though, but that opens up the tire choices.
A 24" offers just enough compactness over the 26" that it makes a big difference.
Funny, it makes sense to me. Smaller triangles/short wheelbase with big wheels.

Thanks - it's a fixed gear now with bullhorns. Will your Moulton be for Jump or dirtrack racing? ;)
[Kidding]. Nice bike. You should see some of the japanese custom ones with HED carbon wheels etc. Very nice. Very pricey!

Interesting. It's a bit like the Surly singlespeed frame I suppose. Kinda set on the idea of 24" though - I like the cruiser's geometry better and the idea of a polished/chrome frame appeals too.
Interesting - as I have recently been kinda obsessed with doing something similar. Well - pretty much the same, except for the hub. I am small and ride a bmx, but wanted to create something for a better commute and prefer the cruiser 24" as opposed to a small 26" mtb. I just acquired an aluminum cruiser frame and I've been thinking to hook it up with cowhorn bars and road-type tires. The only thing I've been trying to figure out is installing an internal geared hub, but I'm not sure what can fit. I read somewhere in the forum of someone installing an SRAM 3-speed into a bmx cruiser (looked like a 20",but not sure). I'm currently going to find out if I can finagle a Nexus 7-speed (brakeless) into the hub spacing.
How did your bike come out? Did you hook it up yet?

My idea's sort of gone back to 406 20" wheels; I've had this idea in my mind for ages and then Tony Renschler posts this beaut on the fixed gear gallery:

...and I'm like - "hey - that's what I wanted to do — and look at how cool it is!"...
So I'm thinking about getting something built if pennies allow. It's funny - I found an 80s 'tall' bmx by mongoose called the moosegoose which kinda fits the brief but they are waaaay too rare and I couldn't deal with the sacrelege of striping one down. So I've done some designs (a guy 'in the business' on the framebuilder's forum here says if I got 100 made I'd easily have a market for them -Time and money sadly doesn't allow for this. :( and am on for maybe getting one-off prototype built.
My design - done with the amazing BikeCad and then embellished in Adobe Illustrator.

Pretty much anything if you have steel chain/seat stays. My raleigh has a rear spacing of about 120mm but it was easily 'cold forged' (IE bent) to 135mm to take a 7 speed SRAM Spectro hub (very good if you are looking at a nexus). Fitting the shifter couldn't be easier and then it's just one cable up to the front to a gripshift. So your options are probably quite wide if you are up to the work.
:)
Tell me more about BikeCad, please.

It's a Java based Computer-aided design app on the web here (http://www.bikeforest.com/CAD/index.php)
They've got several apps for different types of frame and even one for working out spoke lengths on a wheelbuild. All you need is to put in the appropriate dimensions and make all the little tweaks you like. You can save the file you make and can even take it to some builders who use it themselves.
I guarantee you'll lose a few evenings on it!
