Which way loosens the lockring on an old cup and cone type bottom bracket?
thanks, Jarrett
Counterclockwise.
This link has pretty good instructions:

Yup it's lefty threaded. I still get tripped up on that occasionally and will spend like 10 minutes tightening the dang thing :(

No, the lockring is NOT left-hand threaded. The lockring has a standard right-hand thread and is loosened counterclockwise. The fixed cup on the drive side is left-hand threaded and is removed by turning it clockwise.

so nobody thought to ask if it might be French or Italian? (Not that I really think it is...)

Makes no difference. The non-drive side of ANY and ALL bottom brackets are right-hand threaded.
Only the drive side threading varies among English, Italian, French and Swiss bottom brackets.

True, and therefore all BB lockrings have standard RH threads. The trick is to avoid putting French lockrings (35mm x 1mm = 1.378" x 25.4TPI) on English/ISO cups (1.375" x 24TPI = 34.925mm x 1.058threads/mm) or vice-versa; it may work OK, but it may damage the threads or come loose.
