Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Stitched leather grips?

Is there a "how-to" floating around for these?

you don't stitch them, you buy them prestitched. i'm not positive if this is how you do install the long ones, but with the short ones you soak them in water so they stretch a bit. then you carefully slide the buggers on, making sure the seam stays straight for the dope look factor. let them dry overnight and they'll shrink to the bars.

what is that leather cover thing over the toeclip and pedal?

anyone know what those leather booties are that stay attached to the pedals? they look interesting and the FGG page didnt say what they are.

It suggests using a car steering wheel cover. I guess if the width is the same as the bar diametedr, you would not have to awl holes. If it is too wide, i would cut the leather and use an awl to punch the holes.

Not too hot on the booties, but the bars are hotness. Thread hijack averted.

Brooks makes a leather Tape but it is pretty expensive ~$60 a roll. I would think that the steering wheel cover idea is a better bet and a whole lot cheaper.

find a pair of old cinelli bars on ebay, a lot of times they were wrapped in the stitched leather.

the leather on the toe clips is awesome: metal toe clips against nice new sneakers? skuff marks. leather covered toe clips against nice new sneakers? keeps the kicks clean and shining.

So who sells them?

I actually bought a car steering wheel cover once that stitched on like this. I remember it coming out really nice and it basically is the same thing. Size could be a little different, but I'm not sure.

So....... looks like Kragen is the new fixie shop. haha.

I'd recommend cut n stich yourself. Most cities have a leather shop or 4, check the odd cut barrel for deals.
Or spend a buck or two more and get whatever you want. I've got some leather scraps kicking about that are waiting for the right set of bars to come along. hint- a good leather store will have a few dozen colours to choose from, no need to stick to brown iffn ya don't want. A great leather store will have hundreds of colours.

just look at the interwebbin for instructions on how to make a purty seam like that, there are other stiches to use too. I don't want to bore you, half the fun is figuring it out for a good look. be sure and wet your leather before stitching, no need to make it as wide as your bars, slide it on wet ! and let it dry 24 hours w/out jacking with it.

tandy was still selling leather craft goodies long after their pc division had gone dead, wonder if they are still around?

but looking at the toe-sie booties, they are on the outside of the toe straps, so they will keep your toes toasty but will not prevent the scuffs on your pumas

I have a set of the leather stitch on "grips". RED leather with a heavy waxed cord and needle - yes, you sew it on yourself. Still in the package from when I bought it back in '90 or '91. One day, I shall have the right bike to put it on. I tell myself that a few times a year.
