Mountain Biking - Is the wheel worth $20

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's a used Alex DH19 on a nameless rear cassette hub.
It is straight, round and true.
It will replace the mostly round, hard to keep true, single-wall Sun rim that came stock on a 1998 Cannondale F500.
The bike shop that has it can't remember where it came from.
They said I can have it for $20.
And the bike in question is my wet-weather commuter bike that I take off road about once a year.
Sounds like a good deal if you aren't worried about weight. I could be wrong (I was once a few years ago, still bothers me) but I believe that the DH on the rim means that it is a downhill rim which would mean it is extremely durable but on the heavy side. This could be a good thing for a commuter bike.

I have a set of alex dm18's that i picked up for $99 or something. There actually quite strong. Then again, ive givin up on trying to keep weight down on that bike.
$20 is fair for any straight double walled rim, no?

I just finished putting them on. Now I want to take the old hub and build a wheel with it.

That's one of my favorite things to do with spare hubs. I've got 4 spares at the moment: a 32H threadon, a 32H Deore freehub (very heavily scarred though), a 36H threadon and a 36H Shimano RM-40 freehub. I'm looking for deals on rims. With one of them, probably the RM-40, I'm going to respace my Bridgestone and build up a SS rear wheel for it. All that to say--do it. I may sell the threadons as part of a spare parts lot on e-bay (not trying to sell them here).
