View Full Version : Let's try one more time

The last time I suggested this idea, it didn't go anywhere. I think it was because the mods couldn't figure out how to get the idea into the concept that everything on BF had to be a forum.
Trying again.
Value--We use sticking for threads of particular value and members often ask for sticky status for their pet thread.
Need-- members, especially new ones, need a common place to find "common knowledge" basic info, so they don't get hammered in posts. Something like an "info center" or "FAQ center" on other sites.
Suggestion-- New subforum, "Best of BF" as a common location for stickies. This would not be a user subforum where new posts could be made. They could comment on stickies, but not create new ones. New stickies would be created in normal subforums. The stickies would have to have their title changed to reflect the source subforum. Thus, "Road, #<number>, <title>" or "Over50, #<number>,<title>" etc.

I don't think it was the mods not being able to conceptualize, it was likely the vastness of work that would be created.
Also some problems with the idea, many users only visit their said area. Most, I would imagine, do not leave 3 or 4 said sub-forums. Creating another subforum trying to be all inclusive of the entire site would just not be feasible or very usable.
It is far more doable if we attempted this in each forum (like was done in mtbiking forum) Joe would have to rework some code but this would be easier to manage. But I have to point out, this hasn't done much in mtbiking. It worked for a little while but ended up not being used anyways.
I understand the point of this, to eliminate some of the more repetetive posting. However if we did eliminate the repeated posting, there wouldn't be much posting at all.
Thank you for the idea. We are always working on ways to help eliminate some repeating posts and also improve the usability of information gathering. One of these days we will find that golden fleece :)

Goal is not to remove repetitive posting as in help newbies get the base information they need to get started correctly. Nothing is worst starting out than spending 500 to 1,000 on a new bike and then 3 months later finding out you bought the wrong bike.
Speaking of subforums, how about making an optional preference to select which forums are visible at top BF forum list. Obviously the code is written as woman's forum is not visible.
I visit a variety of subforums and it's a pain to scroll past so many forums I would never read. I hate scrolling at this level as it is such a waste of time. Being able to select which subforums to display would be a real plus. I would set it up so new forums would be shown unless user selected not to show forum.

The code for the womans forum is something built in for admins only. The new version has a more extensive "which to view" option. :) Definately a good idea as I agree. I tend to only want to see 3 or 4 subforums :)

Thanks it has the added advantage of seeing on one screen with no scrolling and seeing the most recent post in each subforum of interest.

If you subscribe to a forum (and select "no email notification"), then all you have to do is click on "User Control Panel" in the upper-right corner, and the list will be limited to your subscriptions. That's what I do, so I only have to look at 2 forums instead of the entire list. And if I do want the entire list, then I click in the upper-left corner instead. Simple. Unless I misunderstood the problem...?

Do those work with sub-forums. I thought they were threads only. If not, great find :)

Method to do this -> at the top of the subforum you want there are forum tools. Click on that and subscribe.
Thats kicks ass. I didn't know you could subscribe to subforums. I know you could subscribe to threads :)...

why do people need to make stuff so complicated?!?!?!
I just zoom around and read what I want--the cleanliness of the BF interface is what allows this
if you overburden the user with all kinds of extra muck, then it makes it more difficult
light and lean--if a thread is popular it will be bumped to the top anyway

Yep I think its fine how it is, and also I would find that only viewing ceratin forums, could begin to make other forums un-popular since no one scrols past them and see's latest thread titels etc, e.g. general cylcing could loose interest if you only have a select few forums to view.
And yes, this forum is so easy to 'zoom' around in, especially the front page and it dosn't take ages to load. You probably would save only 1.5 - 2sec doing it the way stated above.
