I wear a Giro Eclipse, which is basically your standard issue simple black roadie helmet. If I had the option between wearing some wind tunnel-testing, 47 vented, abstract sculpture-looking, Team America World Police coloured nightmare or the helmet you just posted, I'd go with your's.

i would imagine that in california if you wore that while doing any serious riding in the summer, your head would burst into flames.

yeah, with only three vents, that bowling ball would be pretty hot. even in the winter.

Snowboard helmets are rad. Earflaps!
I wear something similar to that (a pro-tec "Extreme" sports helmet). It works great, it just makes my head look huge. As for whether anyone gives me funny links *shrug*.

looked at wierd?
who cares...its a helmet
basically, almost anything looks less ****ing ******** than a brain sieve road-style helmet - skate, bmx, etc.
exactly right. road helmets are designed for weiners. skate and bmx helmets are more comfortable, look better, and cheaper. they're just heavier and less aerodynamic, which, like i said, only weiners care about.

My protec has lots of vents, not too big.
BMX Ace freestyle version, light color. Came with a spare washable liner.
Ya, I wear it riding road as well as off.
I'm a cycling fashion dork.
Besides Harryhood, I have another friend who wears a protec skate helmet. It's even come in pretty handy in a fight for him before, lots of weight on those things.

When you do a 6 hour ride, that 1 pound helmet on your head might make a difference being supported by your neck for that amount of time.
i don't think so. i wear my helmet for up to 10 hours at a time, with no discomfort.

"Ace Freestyle Signature: An updated skateboard style helmet with larger oval vents and minor reshaping of the shell lines. It still has a round and smooth shape. For bicycle riding you must get the dual certified Ace Freestyle, not the outwardly similar Ace Skate, which is sold for skating in skate shops rather than bicycling and is not certified to the CPSC standard."

Maybe, but at least your helmet is designed for real bike accidents, rather than rolling down masonite skate ramps.

I demand photographic proof! And you must be on a bike in public, no around the house shots.
It has a slight swat-team/riot-cop look to it. Very popular with the fixie scene.

Check out this beautiful baby. This is what I'm gonna rock when I start wearing helmets.

brunop, that is the first thing you've posted that i approve of, if only for the humor aspect.
I too rock the Pro Tec (full metal jacket)
The thing about skate helmets is they are designed to take blow after blow. If you ever have an impact with a "normal" bike helmet it should be replaced.

Mail came:
Hello,
Sorry for the late reply regarding the weight of our Ace freestyle CPSC certified helmet.
Our offices moved recently, and I could not find our grams scale, but our large (500lbs max.)scale reads .4 kg, or 400g
I hope that helps.
Best regards,

sort of. not exactly. somebody can correct me if i'm wrong, but:
bike helmets are one-impact things, yes. skate helmets might be a bit tougher due to the hardshell around them, but they're not necessarily designed--or, for that matter, garunteed in any meaningful way--to protect your noggin thru' multiple impacts. the helmet certification--i forget the letters, or what they mean--only refer to one-impact protection.
again--it's always worth repeating, even if not always relevant--even if a helmet looks fine after that impact, it should go in the garbage or on the trophy wall or the windowsill where you keep one can of every beer you've ever drank, not back onto your skull.
anyway, OP, no, you don't look stupid wearing a helmet any more than anybody looks stupid wearing anything bike related. shants or spandex or gloves or bags or being all sweaty or having a chain around your waist. or, maybe you'll look stupid, but you'll be fine since you'll look more stupid with your skull opened up all over the pavement. only takes one drunk or one driver with the sun in their eyes, or who didn't give a second glance down the road or....

it works. interesting.
also worth noting that it's not just skate helmets, then, but helmets with this SXP technology. my only wariness is, does it wear out, and how do you know?

400g is frickin' damn heavy. My neck would be killing me after 20minutes... And it has too small vents. Bike helmet or nothing for me (Nothing, actually)

on my skate-style helmet, there are few vent holes. it kind of sucks to be riding on a hot day, to push down your helmet, and have a veritable deluge of sweat pour onto your stem as it is squeezed out of the liner. but whatever.

If you are going to wear that helmet you need to have the obligatory tattoos, piercings, and boxers out the top of your shorts which hang down almost to your ankles. A pair of Vans or Doc Martens with baggy black socks would also be required. Your 1990 Ford Tempo would have to display the local skate board shop's bumper sticker on one side and a NORML sticker on the other.
Don't mess up and wash your hair or shave more than once a week. It's hard to pull off the look if you are too clean. Oh, and make sure that you use the word "rock" when you mean "wear." You have to talk the talk, you know.
Geez, I sound just like my Dad 40 years ago.

I'll ***** and moan all day about the price of *certain* headsets, but I won't think too hard about dropping a bill and change on a nice bike helmet. I think a self-sacrificing foam helmet is better insurenace in a deadly-hard impact than just a plastic shell, though skate helmets are better than nothing.

I use the Pro-Tec Dig Ace or Ace Dig or whatever. It's a bike helmet that's comfy cool when the weather's about 0F outside. Any temp above that and it gets a little warm. No way I'd wear it in summer.

I am hoping on get on rolling down tarmac if I fall.
Next helmet will be a round one.
I use a pro-tec skate helmet, converted to bike use by putting a presta valve "spike" on top. I'm sure it probably compromises the safety of the helmet like no other, but it looks cool. And as long as I die looking cool, I'm happy...
