Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - On-One Mary bars

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So I just scored some On-One Mary handlebars for a good price.
Being a religous riser bar person myself I am super exited to try them out.
Reading up on them it seems like they are like risers but even more comfy.
I don't think I have ever been more exited about handlebars ever.
Hope it is still true once i actually ride them
It will take a while for them to get here too and even longer until I can ride them (since i am heading to Switzerland until the 9th). So feed me with some info in the meantime. Is anywone using them? How do you like them?

Haven't used them, but if you don't like them, I'll buy 'em. Seriously.
I've wanted to get my hands on a pair for the mtb for a while now.
Should I dislike them they will be yours.

One of these days I should really do something about my strange handlebar fetish.
I feel you. It is the one component I keep messing with.
The risers I have kick butt and I love them very much but then Mary comes along and looks all special and I start thinking that life could be better with her. For some reason this keeps happening with handlebars.

46x17, will you post a pic once you get them set up?
I certainly will, but unfortunately it won't be until Jan 12th or so.
That is why I am bugging you all right now so I can hear how awesome they are while I am jonesing to get them.
Love them. Much better than the Jones H-Bars I was running before and I really liked those.

Are those midge bars in silver?
I was just about to post for some more info about On-One bikes after seeing a couple on FGG. Anyone care to give a heads up where more info can be found? Did a quick Google with no luck.

46x17 i'd love to know how you feel about the width as well as the angle of the grip. i too love my riser bars on the fixie too but i cut them down and don't think i'd like full width mtb bar while trying to dodge traffic.
those midge bars lok suhweet as well! is that a waltworks fork on thyat sexy pink ride???

Yup, bought then in black and then stripped the anno off the bars and stem, polished and there ya go.
is that a waltworks fork on thyat sexy pink ride??
Yes indeed. It is amazing.

Except for NYC where I got into some really tight squeezes I think the "you need NARROW bars in traffic" statement is highly exagerated. I run my risers a tad wider than sholder width right now and I have never gotten in a situation here in SF where i would have needed them narrower. I could easily run them a 10cm wider which would make them about the same as the Marys (and if they should still need some trimming then so be it). The angles might be weird we shall see. I really like the move back/move forward concept - in theory at least. If they are more comfy, just as snappy and allow me to do all the fancy fashion skids they'll stay on the bike if not then jim-bob will get them.

they are beautiful. puke...
I wanted to love Mary, I really did.
I bought a pair for my mountain bike. Maybe I didn't give then enough time, but after a couple of miles on pavement, I pulled them off and went back to my Salsa Pro Moto 11 degree flat bars. The flat bars look way cooler on my 29er anyway. I thought the extreme sweep would be more ergonomic, but it actually felt like my wrists were being bent outward. (On a side note, in my opinion riser bars are silly - the extra upward bend is totally unneccessary. Mary would be better if she were bent only in one plane without the extra rise).

Only if you but a "break" on them :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

29ers are the new fixed-gear.
seriously though, offroad fixed on my crosscheck has brought me more joy than riding my track bike in the city ever did.

I see you've been poking around my website. You're referring to this I assume:

I've had it built up for almost a year but no decent pictures of the build. I don't bring a camera with me when I'm on the road (no camelback except when commuting). I'm taking it out tomorrow for a nice long ride an maybe I'll remember a camera.
Anyhow, fantastic bike and really responsive. The forks are Wound-Up and super stiff, nice for climbing the SoCal mountains. I put more miles on the road bike but more time on my Bontrager - love the dirt. I ditched the bullhorns for drops pretty quickly. The bullorns were nice for climbing but prefer drops for everything else - hence the Midge bars on my dirt rig.

Thanks. I wish I had more time to climb on real rock. If I didn't like my family and my bikes so much...
Oh well, no complaints from me.

That Kish is a beaute!!
Thanks lala, rides great too. Trying to get the training time/guts to ride it in the FC 508 (http://the508.com/) next year.
46x17 I apologize for hijacking this thread, especially since I just realised that your post was in regards to Mary and not Midge (I can't even blame alchohol for this one). My friend recently put some Mary bars on his fixed Fat Chance (http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2005/oct/SameerKawash.htm). Loves them. He mounted his upside down for a lower position. Works well and looks cool. Give it a try if you don't mind having the graphics upside down.

I don't know, but those bars don't seem comfortable. It looks like you need an wingspan of an albatross to have the right fit.

Maybe it's just me. cuz I'm a small fry.

I bet you ride track drops with a "break".

No worries about the hijack at all. I actually really enjoyed the conversation and your pictures!

Anyone mount Mary backwards? ;) You know, with the bars swept forwards sort of like bull horns but pointing out more towards the side.

I've run Mary bars for most of 2005, first on a Gunnar SS and currently on an ibis Mojo.
I find them to have comfort, multiple hand positions and less strain on my wrists on longer rides.
On singletrack they have a nice point and shoot position for me. Work with the positioning to see what works best for you. Try them level and with the grips angles down.
Mounted normally they have some rise to them. Mounted upside down works fine if you need to drop the height.
That said, I still use flat and riser bars on my other bikes. i adapt to what i ride pretty easily.
So I mounted them and added some keirin grips.
First impressions. They are very different/weird. Not sure what to think of them yet.
Interesting for sure. I like the position changes they offer. You have a fast forward and a laid back cruising postion. On the other hand, they do make the leg over the bar skid trickier. I will need to ride them some more to make a conclusive statement.

not to hijack this thread but it seems as if many fixie riders are also climbers and boulderers. the comapny i work for has 3 or 4 pretty serious climbers out of maybe 12 riders. i personally find the physical and the mental abilities required for both to be very similar also the simplicity of riding a track bike and bouldering seem similar as well.
Alright tested some more and in conclusion they are not suiteable for my riding style.
Back to risers! I can see how they would work on certain setups though. Bar is very well made and I do appreciate that OnOne tries experiments!
