So I finally got enough cash to get a flip flop wheelset to turn the bike I've been working on into a proper fixed/single speed. Got the wheels on, take it for a spin and realize that the brakes are grabing more tire then rim. So what do I do now? The brakes are shimano 105s with the front on the back and back on the front as the frame is made for old style brakes. This is most likely where the problem is coming from. An suggestions?

get some long-reach caliper brakes.

you went from 27s to 700c it seems, just look for old brakes that have lots of room for adjustment, or if you buy new, shimano 600s, or tektro long reach id say.

when i rocked freewheel my LBS special ordered some cheap, ugly, long reach calipers.
did the trick.

get a round rattail file and file down the slots for the pads..it shouldn't take much. it's easy.

I ran that through babelfish, but it didn't help much.

Anyway, some of us like coasting sometimes.

that, and most cheap hubs are flip flop. you almost have to go out of your way to get single sided or fixed fixed...and anyway. single sided is the way to. i thought track bikes were about not having unnecessary things. what sense does an extra threaded side make?

1) Not everybody that rides fixed rides a track bike.

2) Options are good things to have.

fixed-fixed is great 'cause you can run a freewheel on one side if you want to, (or a bail-out cog) and if you strip one side you don't have to replace the hub.

And don't ride it too much as is or you'll rip your sidewall. Learned that one the hard way.
