# 4 -> seen it
# 6 -> seen it
# 1 -> heard of it; Frankenheimer is an outstanding director. Ronin, Black Sunday, The Manchurian Candidate. Hard to know a director without knowing his body of work.
Tell me why I should watch the other films and I will consider them...
Simply mentioning them does not make me want to run out and pick them up.

1. El Topo (Jodorowsky)
2. Week End (Jean Luc Cinema Godard)
3. Breathless (JLG)
4. Band of Outsiders (JLG)
5. Alphaville (JLG)
6. Contempt (JLG)
7. 8 1/2 (Fellini)
Europa Europa! (German with subtitles)
Flirting (Australian- needs subtitles ;) )
Hollywood Shuffle (American)
Evil (Swedish with subtitles)
There are others, I'm sure, but those are the ones I remember. Evil is probably one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I could not get that movie out of my mind for a long time.

Great idea for a thread.
I totally agree on Sorcerer. See it because it's one hell of a good movie. I'm going to watch the rest of the movies listed.
Frankly, I don't want to know anything more than someone thinks it's a good, lesser-known film. If I don't agree it's good in the first 20-30 minutes, I'll just do something else instead. No big.
I'll add Slacker (Richard Linklater, 1989), Never Cry Wolf (Carroll Ballard, 1983) and A Boy and His Dog (LQ Jones, 1975).
Why? Because I said I like 'em. Look 'em up at IMDB for more info if you want. :)

i've never seen alphaville, but the grindcore band i used to be in had a song called "alphaville", a nice 30-second piece that supposedly had lyrics inspired by the movie, but our singer actually just screamed random words and phrases and no one noticed.
anyway, best movie you haven't seen...my vote's for "me and you and everyone we know".

3. Breathless (JLG)
Yeah, but I got kind of tired near the end with Jean Seeberg and her idiomatic French where she kept saying over and over: tray Bee-en (très bien).
Eraserhead (Lynch)
Milagro Bean Field War
Harold and Maude

Yeah, Warren Oates right? I didn't know that was Milius.
I've been waiting for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid with Kirstoferson and Colburn for years, and it will finally be available as part of the upcoming Peckinpah boxset. Yay.

Harold and Maude is a great movie! Ruth Gordon .........
All That Jazz
Court Jester(I know, I know, corny and classic Danny Kaye)

Muppets from Space(had to mention, the best Muppet movie ever.)

Don't know if this counts, how neglected or forgotten, but I'll throw out Something Wild by Jonathon Demme. I love this. Has a great soundtrack, and I love how the tone turns from a light breezy (edit: albeit weird) road movie comedy to all menacing and dark halfway thru when Ray Liotta pops in. (editedit: Also fun cameos by Tracey Walter, John Sayles, John Waters, and Charles Napier)

Vanishing Point was cool. Some really strange and cool movies came out during that period (TLBT), including
Walkabout, Zachariah and VP. All classics in their own way.

Barry Lyndon- Stanley Kubrick: Worth the price of admission for the famous 'thousand candle' scene alone. Kubrick insisted on no artificial lights for an extended indoor shot.
Zatoichi To Yojimbo -Okamoto: Some of the best character acting ever portrayed on screen. You will come to love these characters as soon as they are introduced.
Three Colors Trilogy -Kryztof Kieslowski : The Blue episode will haunt you. Red will surprise you, and White...well let me just say make sure you see them in order. (White first. Or is it blue? Damn, I forget.)

It's hard to decide what "never heard of" is, but here are some lesser known movies that I consider all-time classics.
Bottle Rocket
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des loups)
Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
Kicking and Screaming
Not quite an all-time classic, but "Spring Forward" was also an outstanding drama that seemed to be overlooked.

Suburbia. 80's punk rock movie. About a bunch of kids living in abandoned houses, stealing food from freezers in open garages and general punk life. Did a great job of showing the relationships those kids built with each other when they had no one else. Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers was in it. He was known as Mike B. the Flea then. Played in various skate/punk bands before the Peppers.

I recall seeing something about that in the credits (well I think I remember)

When I was younger (three years ago) I would have said Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange", but now I join two others in this forum and recommend "Paths of Glory" — Why? It's a BEAUTIFUL movie, I have NEVER been able to watch the last ten minutes without crying.
Another is "Cinema Paradiso", by Italian director Guiseppe Tornatore. When asked, I still say this is my all-time favorite movie. It's great! The cinematography is beautiful, as is the story, though many cynics out there would disagree. I personally think that this is Tornatore's most auto-biographical film and that's why it's his best (none of his other films compare, at least not the others I've seen, which is really only "Malena").
Fellini's "8 1/2" is way up there too. Exquisite film. "La Dolce Vita" is not bad, the episode w/ Marcello and his father is so nice — the clown with the trumpet, aw...
Some of my favorite really old ones are are "Undercurrent" with Robert Mitchum and Katherine Hepburn, and "Holiday" also with K. Hepburn and with Cary Grant. "To Catch a Theif" is really good too, everything looks great — especially Grace Kelly
Another A. Hitchcock masterpiece which is rarely mentioned is "Torn Curtain," that movie rules!
One movie you will be hard-pressed to find is Valerio Zurlini's "Cronaca Familiare", starring Marcello Mastroianni and Jacques Perrin (also in Cinema Paradiso, albeit much older). By the way, if anyone has access to this film in ANY format, please PM me!
I watched it on TCM a long time ago and have been looking for it ever since.
Oh! And "Rushmore," Wes Anderson's absolute best (which I hope, but doubt, he will some day equal).

Dark City.
Dead Alive-Peter Jackson's debut. The box claims "the goriest fright film ever made." It's pretty gory and absolutely hillarious.
Suspiria-Dario Argento Argento consistently turned out some of the creepiest pieces evr commited to celluloid. This just happens to be my favorite.
Fool For Love-Sam Shepard Shepard wrote, directed and starred in this one. I had actually read the play before I ever knew about the film. The story itself is rather twisted and the film does a good job of bringing it to life. Plus, most of the soundtrack comes from Waylon's Honky Tonk Heroes album.
Repo Man-Alex Cox Required viewing during my high school turn into punk rock. I just got it on DVD and it's even better now that it was then.
