I am searching for some 650x28 or 30c cross/hybrid tires. Mainly to be used for city riding on paths or perhaps a very light dirt trail. Rims are 650c road rims.
26" tires won't work, will they? If they do, what would be the equivalent in inches?

As far as I know, no knobby 650c tires exist. The widest I know of is the Terry Tellus, which is a 650x28.
650c wheels have a 571mm diameter, while 26" mtb wheels have a 559mm diameter. I'd be worried about the brake pads being able to soak up that difference.
How much clearance does the bike have for wider tires?
