Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - why oh why did i buy that phil hub?

Can somebody please reassure me that getting it instead of iro/velocity was not just a waste of money?

I don't have phil hubs, but I've ridden friends bikes who do and they're really nice. You won't regret it.

You are right, it was a terrible idea. I will give you $50 for it, and you can use it to buy the IRO hub.

you didn't waste the money; you have a piece of equipment will last for the rest of your life, manufactured by a company with good personnel, business, and environmental practices.

You done good - PW hubs are smooth, beautiful and durable. They're damn near perfect. :love:

I bought Phils and don't regret it. I was going to buy IRO's but I knew in the back of my head I would eventually get Phils. So I saved money.

And yes, they do look good. I get comments all the time on the Hubs (along with nice bike, you're riding no brakes, etc.)

max, max, max. are you regretful because you think you overpaid for the phil hub or just that you think it's not worth the money beyond what the IROs cost? two different issues.

if the former, you might have a point, and, well, that might suck. live and learn. if the latter, listen to your bikeforums brethren. ****'s solid.

nah..i got a fair price...albeit...from a shop so it wasnt a deal per say....

i guess 20 years from now...when i build my kid's first track bike and give him my hub...i will be happy i invested now

wow, that would be a pretty significant chunk of *anyone's* income!

yeah, phils are 100% worth it. they feel markedly better than anything else I've ever ridden on, plus they're sealed and ballistic. you'll be happy max. try riding on 'em.

It's called buyers remorse. You buy something that is a little pricey and you wonder if you did the right thing. It goes away. A year from now you will glad you have that hub and will think the price was a great deal. It's just human nature.

You get what you pay for.

Never owned a Phil but for my next wheel build I'll get a set. Rim choice TBA. :)

I own both phil and Iro/Formula based wheelsets. The Iro/Formula is a good deal for the money and a solid entry-level product, but the Phils are in a different league entirely. Period. You didn't waste your money.

I had an IRO hub. For the $30 I paid it was great. I stripped it after a year and a half. Now I have a Phil and so far there has not been a single problem. We shall see how it holds up. In general you get what you pay for.

Well, I'm working all day today at the office job, but I'm going to spend a few hours tomorrow building up some wheels if you want to stop by with some beers...of course, it's a long commute from seattle just to help me build some wheels...but thanks for the offer.

Anyway, one set of hubs is for a friend of mine, so I guess I really only got 4 sets. They are for builds for three of my current bikes. I have way too many bikes, I know, yes dear.
1) one pair of forty-hole touring hubs for my cargo bike.
2) one pair of High flange track to Deep V w/ straight gauge spoke for a super-stiff racing wheel.
3) one pair of low flange track to Razor for comfy road riding.
4) one pair road hubs for my fast geared bike

...and that's on top of the phils I currently have...touring set on the heavy cargo bike, track on the folder...and my smooth-as-silk d.a. track wheels...I guess I've got a whole bunch of nice wheels now
