Foo - Ogg Vorbis

Seems Fedora loves this format, being open source. I have downloaded support for .mp3 files for my linux system, but might give vorbis a try. What are peoples opinions of this open source format?

It's an ok format. I encoded some of my favorite songs into 256 VBR MP3 and a "6" quality Ogg Vorbis and couldn't tell a diffference in the sound. File size wise, I think that the Ogg Vorbis files were slightly smaller, but nothing to be excited about. Overall, I didn't think that this format is much different from MP3. Audiophiles may disaggree, but I couldn't hear it.

The problem with Ogg Vorbis is that most portable palyers won't read them. The only one I know that does is an iRivier H120. That's big problem for me but may not be a problem for what you want to do...

I've seen with a fair amount of portable players, that you can download various firmwares to play ogg. I just ripped a CD to Vorbis, sounds the same as mp3. Although my speakers and onboard sound i am using is probably not the best...
Not sure why more portable audio players dont support ogg, its open source. Just about every mp3 player now comes with a CD, they could include a CD to Vorbis ripper...

Ogg is better for acoustic music and such from my understanding.

I'll stick with MP3 though...192Kbps is good enough for 98% of us.

It's got a weird name. Sounds like an alien's name.

technically mp3 is proprietary, its just was never enforced....ogg-vorbis is an obvious solution

bitrate for bitrate especially below 192khz ogg has better quality, its a lossless codec, mp3 is not

I think fedora comes with FLAC as well, another lossless format
