BMX - 44-16 or 44-18 for kids first bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Bought the kid a first bike for x-mas. He didn't like the mags, so I stuck some rims on. The wheels coming off have an 18t on it. The wheels I put on have a 16t. Should I use one over the other to make it easier for a first timer?

44-16 is good.

its what almost all of the bikes like 2-4 years ago came with and what the riders were using...and its on the ratio thing....so yeah...44-16 is good.

No benefit on pulling the 18 that came with the new bike to swap over? Otherwise i'm just gonna pull it for having a new spare in the box.

it will be easier to pedal with the 18, and for a kid's first bike that could be good

Newsflash, young'un. 44-16 is what all the bikes came with 30 years ago, not just the last 2-4.

i would put the 18t on just beacause your kid will pedal easier

Instead of putting a bigger freewheel on, why not put a smaller sprocket on? Say 39/16 or something.

the freewheel would be easier to put on, asumeing he doesn't have 3pc cranks

and he already has the freewheel.
