the gear ratios on the stayer bikes is also totally ****ing insane.

yeah, i noticed the sloping angle immediately, but the first thing to impress me was that...well...holy ****, that is one tall gear.

I am too lazy to read the sites linked, but how do the riders communicate to the motorpacers that they want to speed up? Is there some sort of sensor to let the motorpacer know to go faster so the rider can kick?

shout, tempo is for easy/ease back, can't remember what it was for attack, plans are normally made before the race anyway.

After spending a couple of minutes reading up at the link site I know the answers to your questions but I'm too lazy to tell you.

But on a gear that big, it's even harder to turn it slowly, so you've no choice but to keep going, & shout 'tempo' at the pacer so he knows not to try & overtake anyone else.

And if you blow completely you shout 'ho' at the pacer, preferably before you've lost the bike completely & he can't hear you, so he knows to slow down & try & get you back on the bike again & back up to speed
