Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Waterproof blueprint cases?

...I'm certainly going to bffg hell...two bag threads in a week!

Anyway, since many of us are messenger and/or designers, I'm wondering if any of y'all has a lead on nice waterproof tube cases, such as for holding rolls of blueprints or posters or etc.? I've got a new client that has taken to giving me lots of big rolly stuff to carry through the rain and I'd rather not lose the client by ruining their stuff.

not a case but... what about carrying one of those jumbo-sized traash bags in your regular bag, then wrapping the rolly stuff when you get it?

My dad used to have a bunch of hard plastic cases that were originally for blueprints or something. He made one into a pool cue case, and another into a fly fishing rod case...

I imagine you could make something similar out of PVC pipe?

Yeah, I'm most accustomed to seeing those hardshelled plastic blueprint cases. I'm sure a bit of tape could make them 'water resistant'.

Me, I just fold my plots down to 8.5x11 or so. Rolls are overrated.

Back before the printers I work with went direct-to-plate (in aught-2), I made a big ass waterproof tube for film positives out of a couple bucks worth of 4" diameter PVC, two end caps and an extra shoulder strap I had laying around. Was much sturdier and less expensive than the blueprint ones.

Most of what I'm carrying for them is actually large posters and photos. They're a large-scale printing firm and I move around proofs for them. No huge rolls of blueprints (that's another client...and no case in the world will hold the prints for a 27 story building) so I may just go for one of those medium sized cases and waterproof it myself...maybe a bead of silicone around the top opening and holes and just use the bottom for access?

The tranzporters look nice, but at 200 bucks each...the yard waste bag looks more and more appealing. the 6 x 50 art-and-poster tube for 150 is a little better, but come on folks, it's cordura and pvc! I can commission some custom ones for less than 100/ea

Alternately just go to the Home Depot or whatever, get a appropriate size PVC pipe, and caps for the end. It should be about 10 buck I would think.

you got a good military surplus store near you?
look for the plastic artillery shell cases. they come in varying sizes.

I made a cheep blueprints case from pvc pipe with a screw end. If it is good enough to keep water in is it good enough to keep water out. It only cost about $5 to build.

Just dont crash with those pvc pipe tubes when its below freezing, you would be amazed at how that stuff shatters when its really cold.

r-dub- are you a messenger? carrying around a tube specifically for rolls just isn't logical, imho. do you really want to carry a case around all day long when it could be empty a good portion of that time?

trash bags are alright, but what really comes in handy are those disposable umbrella bags that bigger buildings stick in their lobbies on rainy days. plus, they're free.

find an architectural firm your familiar with, one that is familiar with you would help too..........I carry two plastic bags made just for blueprints, they are very heavy duty and cheap, and I got mine from the shipping dept of one of my architecture clients

option 2, find a local company that specializes in replicating or duplicating blueprints, most of them have to stock that kind of thing as well

I'm a messenger, but not how you're thinking. Most of my clients are extremely regular and we organize them into routes. We have a new client that we work with for a very specific two hour period every day. Lots of their stuff is or can be rolled up. In this case, it makes perfect sense to carry around a case for such items. Considering that the next stop after them is our office, it's super convenient.

i've used this product (www.thirdhand.com) to carry multiple rolls of blueprints that i've wrapped in plastic bags. works like a charm and is really compact when not in use.

I was going to suggest one of these blueprint tubes (http://www.tranzporter.com/tubes.asp) as well. I have had mine for a few years (got it as a gift) and it does a great job at protecting blueprints, prints and other large rolled up documents for my clients.
