Recumbent - BROL is down...what's up with that?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A server migration that was supposed to occur in November was attempted today. It did NOT go well. It appears that our server was "decommisioned" before the swap rather than after. We're not sure but the currently posted back-up may be the newest they have. We're currently arguing to save the data on the "decommissioned" server. If that does not occur, this may be a very long process. We're doing the best we can at this time.

Well, I enjoyed reading the old articles. I didn't know about the site back when those articles were originally posted. So in a way, it's new to me!

Guess we gotta make do with this "back-up" recumbent forum. It's not as good though, but at least it appears that the annoying mookie person isn't as active as he was last time I was here.

I forgot that I had my own personal Bike Forums troll!

We've been moving and have been in a temporary home for the last six months. This location has dial-up. So we DO have back-ups but they're from six months ago. We were PAYING another service to perform back-ups for us and it wasn't done properly.

Anything else, Amy?

What is it with publishing moguls? When things get funky they find the easy way out and blame someone else for the problem. You can learn a lot from the ReBike way of life Bryan.

When my ReBike tire goes flat I never blame it on the tire, the road or someone else. I pull out my backup inner tube, fix the flat and continue riding on the mountain road passing every roadie I see.

Segregation??? huh??

This "back-up" forum, as you call it, Diane, is vastly larger, more informative and doesn't employ segregation like BROL does. Take a look around, and you'll quickly see that it embraces nearly every aspect of HPVs..... not just recumbents. And I've NEVER seen it down.

IF there's no segregation in this forum, then why the need for the long list of topics in the main menu?? Sorry, seems *just like segregation* to me.

That said, I'm afraid I don't understand your problem with this "segregation". We all have different areas of biking we would like to discuss with each other and no one is prevented from migrating back and forth from one group to another...... so what are you saying??? There shouldn't be any specific pages for specialized types of bikes??? I don't think anybody held a gun to your head to force you to go to BROL ...... did they???

Segregation ....... jeez, get over it.

ChiliDog
12-28-05, 08:04 AM
I think they mean "segregation" in that they were probably thrown off the BROL site and hold a grudge. Otherwise, why would they be personally attacking Bryan and BROL?

Sorry, everybody. Whenever I post anywhere, it seems to bring out the loonies. That's why I usually stick to my own neck of the woods. I'd forgotten about amyd and Mooky on this forum or I never would have posted. Some people are obviously not concerned with explanations and are more occupied with attacking me for any and every perceived slight.

Good news is that someone hacked into the old server and the data appears to still be there as of right now. I just have to get my host to switch back before it gets erased.

Bryan,
I do not recall any posts directed towards you with vicious mayhem. May I suggest you go for a ride on a used ReBike instead of all those expensive free bikes you get to try out. Riding a ReBike is good for the mind and body. No excuses needed when cruising on a ReBike.

Do not forget to bring along an extra inner tube. Play it safe. Better to be prepared than not. You can blame a pasing roadie for a flat tire but that wil not get you rolling again.

I must admit, I go to BROL a lot less than bikeforum, both seem nice and informative boards to me though.

However, there's one thing I'd like to understand (amyd, I'm talking to you you nutjob): did you pay anything to use BROL? no? then what gives you the right to badmouth those who provide the service you use for free?

When I have issues with free stuff I use, I keep them for myself, or I try to offer constructive advices if the owner of the service explicitely solicits them. It's up to you, but frankly unless you paid actual dollar to use the service, I reckon you need to keep your mouth shut.

They backed it up. They just lost the back-up. They thought they had deleted it but they just found it about five hours ago. I'm at a Starbucks using their Wi-Fi to download it because it's faster than my dial-up. Good news is that all will be well in the next couple of days. Even the board and all of the accounts appear to be fine.

And amyd... It's called EXPLAINING and KEEPING PEOPLE INFORMED. I've always veen very open with what is going on at 'BentRider and I won't change that just because it annoys you. And we did try to switch servers all three of those times. We always had issues because of our databases and the amount of bandwidth that we use. We actually paid for a new server twice and had to get our money back both times becuase they couldn't accomodate us in the end. You've obviously already decided that I'm an idiot so I'm sure this answer won't satisfy you either.

Figure THIS one out-- I came on this site, not signing in, and every thread on every forum came up fine...except this one (BROL down) It would come up, then start to show posts, then shut down and give me a server error page...repeatedly, with checks on other threads, in this forum and others, working fine. Not until I logged in could I read this thread. Twilight Zone.

Bryan, I like what you try to do on your site. But, this site is easier to navigate and post on. On this thread I've seen posters that I haven't seen in a while which means they spent most of their time over on your site.
As for the "trolls" I've learned to ignore them. After a while they get tried of being ignored and they leave.

Why is the "General Discussion" Topic, (in the old BROL forum archives prior to 9-2004) missing ALL of its posts prior to June of 2004 (that's about 3.5 years worth of valuable data)? AND, why has the search feature, for *ALL* topics in same said archives, been disabled? You did promised that those archives would be carefully perserved and made available. It WAS there...... and searchable. Now, for some strange reason, it has magically disappeared.

Prior to Sept of 2004, we were using EZBoard. The board was hosted on their server and not ours. Unfortunately, they didn't keep as much data as we would have liked. That's a major part of why we switched to vBulletin. Anything that's in those EZBoard archives is what's always been there. We didn't delete any of it.

One thing a lot of people fail to understand is that our message board is a piece of software that we didn't write. We can't manipulate some parts of it in the same way that you can't manipulate some functions of Microsoft Word. All you can do is buy a better program. We're not programmers and don't have the capability to build our own perfect message board. We have to work with what's available.

And Chili... At a Starbucks in New York. I got back on Tuesday. BUT there are at least two Starbucks in Ohio. One is on 71 north of Mansfield.

My original post addressed one issue, and only one issue;

I genuinely sympthize Mr. Ball's concerns about his unavailable web site, but find it a tad disrespectful that he chooses to utilize someone else's forum to dump personal excuses, and finger-point about its unavailability. Visiting another forum to inform your readers about a down site is one thing... finger-pointing and repeated complains about the host is quite another.

Amyd, what is it with you and Alan "Mooky"? Is tag-team whining your specialty? Bryan does more for recumbent information than anyone else out there but if if he posts here he's suddenly suspect? Jeez, the two of you are about helpful as used toilet tissue.

Don't worry about it. I'm used to it. I'm the subject of more conspiracy theories than JFK. I broke the golden rule of recumbency and dared to try and make a living. If you do that, then you're automatically suspect and everything you do has deep and dark hidden motive.

Visiting another forum to inform your readers about a down site is one thing... finger-pointing and repeated complains about the host is quite another. Checking the archives here, we can see that he has visited Bikeforums, at least twice before (three times now, in the last 12 months), with nearly identical BROL. hosting problem posts. What's ironic, is that in those posts, Mr. Ball promises his readers that a host change is emanate, but here it is several months later, and we see the SAME host and MORE of the same problems.

What a surprise. Who would have ever dreamed that amyd is a psycho homebuilder. And why does amyd sound so similar to "user", complete with contrived reference links? Or is it perhaps that the mentally disturbed all sound alike?

Read amyd's previous posts, such as the ones about lawsuits over one inept rider's inability to perform advanced manouevers, such as stopping.

What a twunt. Or maybe "she" is is somehow intertwined with the insignificant whinging population of pseodoposters/cowards at BROL who are also critical of Bryan, Easyracers, Bacchetta, and some homebuilders. Funny how said cowards are so smug in their ideas yet, at the same time, as delusional as they are wrong.

On the other hand, Mooky is hilarious. If there were a Ti/CF ReBike, the overpaid underworked FOG crowd would find them delightful. And set the recumbent movement back (again) for another 20 years.

Wrong. I have copies dating back to 2002, which was searched AND plucked, from your current vbulletin archives. Proof is, the "Home Builders" archives are still intact (although unsearchable) back to 2002 (although I suspect that will change also). The docs in question were deleted June of 2005 (9 months AFTER the switch to a new NG). No matter, I know why they were deleted.

Wrong again, Mr. Ball.

As Allen L Roland would say, "Let it snow.... Let It Snow.... Let It Snow"

If you know why we deleted the files can you tell me? We didn't manually delete a thing. If the software deleted it after some specific amount of time or something, it wasn't something that we know anything about. I stand by what I said. I never went in and deleted any old stuff from the EZBoard archives. Period. The only stuff that's been deleted from our board is the occasional malicious thread that gets way too out of hand. Same as they do here. I usually much prefer to lock a thread rather than delete it. A locked thread can still be read, just not posted on.

And congratulations! You now apparently know more about vBulletin than I do. I didn't know I could do that. Seems like a silly way to hide something if I wanted to though, doesn't it? I assume that's what you're implying? If I wanted to hide info posted on my board, I could just delete it. No need to hide it from the search.

Helicopters use a lot of gas. If you are concerned about petroleum dependancy in the United States you will not use a helicopter to travel.

My rusty $75 Ebay ReBike takes me anywhere I want to go.

Johnny Cash, Elvis and Roy Orbison are the leaders of the New World Order and they have nothing to do with bicycles. I see no reason why you depend on a helicopter to visit them.
