Bicycle Mechanics - Break in bike service question

What do they do to it? I plan to do it myself. Anything besides adjust the front and rear DR and adjust the brakes (handle tension I'm assuming).

Oh, and what mileage do you usually do it at? We bought our tandem and my single at the same time. The single is derailing fine, the tandem is off a little, so I know it needs some break in adjustment. They both have ~400 miles on them.

We used to call it the 30 day tuneup, but we knew they wouldn't be back in 30 days. It has everything to do with how much it's ridden.

We would check over the entire bike. Tighten what came loose, loosen what got tight, check the hubs, BB, and HS. Check the brakes, check the shifting, check the trueness of the wheels. If you do your own work, and keep an eye on all those things anyway, you don't have to have them do it for you.

Then again, if you let them do it, and the something goes kaplooey with the bike later on, they can't tell you that you didn't being it back for it's 30 day tuneup :)

Good point...I think I'll take them in. Would like to learn to do it myself though.

- cables can stretch... brakes may need readjustment... wheels can be checked for trueing...

- general safety stuff?

(you don't want to be able to shift into your dork disk, right?)

I agree: it's an excellent point.

There's always time to learn when your warranty expires, or there's always a $10.00 thrift store bike on which to cut your chops.
