Commuting - I rarely commute by bike but...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Being that we can dress casual at work this week I decided to go for it. My wife dropped my son off at school and picked him up so I could do this (usually, she drops him off and I pick him up). Anyway, I've ridden to work a few times this year but it was pretty cool this morning (mid 40s) and of course I need lights for the ride home because of the short days. I had a great ride though. Just shy of 10 miles one way so I got in 20 miles worth of pedal time today. Much better than I would have done at the gym.
BTW-I did a 50 mile ride on Friday and another 40 miles on Monday so 20 miles is really nothing for me.

Welcome anyway. Did ya learn your lesson or are you gonna have a go of this commuter non-sense?

Congratulations. Now is the child old enough to ride to school? And back? I did in High School. A child who needs to be driven to and from school is outside of my knowledge zone. Does his school allow it, is the area safe, will the Wife allow it? Could you tandem him there go on to work and pedal him home?
Welcome to the road. I'm a fellow San Diegan. My wife also drops my son at daycare, and I pick him up. I park my car at our local trolley station where my bike is kept in a locker (for free btw). I take the trolley for half of my commute, and ride the rest...about 8 miles. Works out to be 16 miles daily.
If there's a trolley station near you, I highly recommend looking into it. Lockers are available at most stations. There's a wait for Old Town, and a monthly trolley pass is $60 which includes all bus transfers. You can find out everything you need to know at www.sdcommute.com. I'm gonna miss living in such a bike friendly city when I leave this summer. We have it really good here. PM me if you want any more info.

Thanks, I'm in north county near where the new commuter train line is going in. I live by the coast and work in Vista so my commute isn't very far. I used to work off Carol Canyon Rd and the 15 freeway and would take the Coaster every Friday and ride my bike in to work from there. I did that for about a year. The Coaster is great because there is room at the front and rear of almost every car for bikes.
I'll probably do this once a week especially during the summers. The only thing that sucked was the 10lb pack I was carrying and the extra weight of lights and batteries on my bike.
Maybe during the bike to work week I'll see if my wife would be okay with me riding in that entire week.
We do have it good here. I've lived in San Diego for almost 8 years now...can't see ever living anywhere else.
Edit-My son is way too young to ride to school by himself.

Panniers allow you to haul all your needs, for work, and still there's room for groceries, if you need to stop on the return trip. If your child is too small to ride his bike, you could do the trailer thing. I used to drop off my youngest, then go home and switch to paniers, for the commute to work.
