Like I said on another forum...Imagine a gay cowboy spaghetti western:
Roy: Now look Earl, you are either going to go out there and fight me, or I'll just shoot you here.
Earl: Jingo, I got something to tell you...
Jingo: What Earl... (longing glance)
Earl: Jingo....I....I...Love you.... (they start kissing)
(after a few seconds, Roy shoots off Earl's hat while telling him to knock it off....Earl doesn't notice....a few more seconds later Roy walks out muttering some stuff under his breath)
...I can't help but find that whole scene just so incredibly absurd....it's just the total opposite of what you expect from the "cowboy" stereotype....
As for the movie...for some reason it seems like it would fall into the same category as the bridget jones diaries...which was a movie I found disturbingly boring....I shall not endure another "chick flick"....even if it doesn't involve chicks.

This showed up in the books and movies section earlier. This is twisted. So twisted.
This movie is really going to give sheep herders a bad name.

I think Daisy's safe in this one.

I think sheep herders already have a bad name....baaaahhh...

Depends on which sheep you talk to I guess.
disturbing, disturbing disturbing. God where is this country going to?
... and what is wrong with love? Man/Man, Man/Woman, or Woman/Woman... I think the world could use a bit more of it.
Praise the lord, Clint Eastwood isn't in it!!!!

Is this a porn movie? If not then there is a chance that you might be making an unreasonable assumption. I understand that this movie may well contain stuff like plot lines, dialogue, cinematography and possibly even acting.
Not all movies about gay men consists solely of two guys "going at it".

Exactly, an excellent "Gay" movie out of Australia The Sum of Us http://imdb.com/title/tt0111309/ is that way.
Plot sumary: Set in Sydney, Australia. A (heterosexual) father and his gay son are trying to find Ms/Mr Right respectively. The film shows their relationships with one another and the objects of their affection as tradgedy strikes. There is no overt 'message' in the film, just a very natural, entertaining story-telling.
One of the most touching parts of the film was in the backstory when the boys 'Gran' and her life partner were split up and taken to different Rest Homes.
I cannot for the life of me understand why the homosexuality becomes the focus over the story. If the story is a good one, who the Hell cares who it is about? It either works or it doesn't. Now if the sheep get some action, it's bound to be a hit.

I haven't seen the film but potentially the homosexuality is the focus of the story. This doesn't make it either a good or bad story though.
Maybe it's because heterosexuality has been the industry default for so long. There is a large 'straight but not narrow' audience who I'm sure is ready to accept homosexuality on the big screen. Although it's little more that a bit of chocolate syrup on top, it is a change from plain vanilla.

I agree. From all the stories I have read or movies viewed, I have found almost anything can be made interesting if the author/director does their job well. Closing oneself off to something simply because they think the subject matter is distasteful tends to reinforce a blinders attitude towards Life.

It is the default because let's face it, most humans are heteros. But I wouldn't say it was syrup on top. IMO, it is more of case of vanilla swirl with nuts.

Uhhhhh. Actually heterosexuality has been a default in the WORLD for so long. If it weren't than you wouldn't be on this forum, nor would I. Nor would the aforementioned gay cowboys nor the sheep that are no longer nervous.
More correctly to the crux of your comment, hetero is the default method of reproduction. The world has been straight & gay since Adam met Steve. ;)
I think when God made Eve, he was just ribbin us.

Yeah, and normally only heterosexuals have hetero reproduction. NO?
Define 'normal (ly)'. I'm unaware of anything but the joining of an egg & sperm that will result in an embryo. Even lesbians who use AI to get pregnant are using the 'normal' hetero reproduction method, yes?

normal = default (a term that you used )

I will evade the whole debate by saying.... "Show me the Monkey".

Thank you.
Quite a stretch from heterosexuality in film to the biological aspects of procreation, but I can make the jump.

So what? Now beastiality is default? You're losing me here...

I saw the movie yesterday, and it's one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long time. It's much more than just a "gay cowboy" movie. The acting is great, it's a very moving story, and the scenery is beautiful.
My $.02.
I often think men who are threatened by the idea of watching a movie like this often associate with the characters too much, but can't admit it. There's food for thought for ya.

The reason I asked for clarification is because as I see it, default seldom equals 'normal' when discussing things such as sexuality and the like.
If you were to survey a random group of people (and recieve honest answers) as to their sexual preferences and practices and plot a bell curve on the data you would find that the largest or 'normal' group would fall far outside the percieved notions of normal hetero behaviours. IE: Straight missonary with no embelishments. So to while normal as applied to reproduction is a given, it's totally irrelevant when applied to sexuality.

+1 It rocks their self perception and that's uncomfortable to face.

I identified with the characters, and I'm a heterosexual woman! It's such a good story of love and longing . . . sort of a Romeo and Juliet story . . . that it goes beyond labels.
Don't worry, guys. If you want, you can identify with the Randy Quaid character.

Probably not really that so much, its a bit of a broad psychological cliche.
The real challenge is against a social heteronormacy that a film's hero and protagonist is ultimately a virile sexual dynamo who's going to end up getting some "very hott sex" for doing whatever it is that he has done. This paradigm can only be broken if the hero is really an anti-hero and can accept the lack of sex in a manly fashion or the film is basically asexual.
Having a hero that might like to "take it" contravenes the rule of the inpenetrable lead. It's a direct challenge to the straight male viewer and to withstand that you need to be very secure in your sexuality. Most straight men believe that they are secure but find challenge in sexual attraction from another man uncomfortable because of their own laws of attraction and reciprocation.
So what? Now beastiality is default? You're losing me here...
No not trying to add beastiality, just to lighten the debate. Just saying I am typical (grunt) guy that prefers not to see most dramas. Give me an action, comedy, horror, or all of three and I'm fine.
I enjoyed the movie
Jeffrey (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113464/) . Not exactly a drama, but still a movie where main and supporting characters are gay. IMHO one of Patrick Stewarts best performances. Didn't feel threatend at all, actually had to laugh at the kissing scene/movie theater scene.

And I think you wife is correct.

I'm not threatened by the movie. I feel threatened by a world that thinks cowboys kissing and copulating is acceptable. IOW, I feel threatened by a society that doesn't feel threatened by the movie.

That's really sad. I feel for you. The world is changing, can you keep up?

Why wouldn't it be acceptable?
Y'know, it gets awful lonely out there on the range. Is there something you want to tell us?

Read the book of Revelations. You say it's changing... and I agree. I have no intention of trying to "keep up.

Excellent end times fiction. As much credence as Nostradamus
I haven't seen the movie either but I heard great reviews about it. I will be going to see it soon. Man-women, Women-man, Man-Man, Women-Women, WHO CARES, as long as two people are happy, contributing to society then whom are we to judge? After reading this now I really want to go see it.
If it was two cowgirls doing gay stuff, would you watch it then? And what's the difference?
Personally, I won't watch it in the theaters simply cuz I have a list of other, more mindless movies that I want to watch first (Rent, Narnia, King Kong). Secondly, I prefer lighter entertainment than a story about two doomed lovers in a world that won't accept their relationship or be honest w/ themselves about their feelings. However, when it comes out on cable, I'll most likely watch it.
Good point. I can hear them now "YEAH.... That girl on girl stuff is HAWT!"
Hypocrites

:roflmao:
Having a hero that might like to "take it" contravenes the rule of the inpenetrable lead. Might not the hero who can "take it" prove the rule of penetrable lead. Or receive. Or both. I'm sorry. This is getting out of hand. I'll just stop now.
When I read the phrase "inpenetrable lead," do you know the first thing I thought of?
