You haven't even considered a good used bike yet!
I'm kinda in the same boat as you. Or, I was just in the same boat. I finally decided on a frame and set-up that I've wanted for years. I bought it used, and am saving a ton of money.
I bid on it on eBay, and it didn't meet the reserve price. The seller contacted me after the closing, in part because I asked him what his reserve was during the bidding time and made him an offer before bid closing. We settled on a fair price and I should be getting it in the next week.
But, I knew what I wanted.

Sitting you down with legs crossed.
FOCUS....ummmmm
Figure out what you need. If you don't need anything look at where you ride and judge what you want. If you have a bike, don't buy a replica bike (two burly ht's just aren't worth it for example).
Hope that helps.

Be patient, and your dream bike will come to you...
Just keep daydreaming, and you will have the vision...
Quickly sketch it onto a napkin or post it note...
Take it straight to you LBS and ask them what the hell it is!
If they're good, they'll be able to help you...

What kind of riding do you do right now. Does your current bike do the job ?
What riding do you want to do.
Its nice to have a do-everything machine that can handle all your local terrain. I dont think there is any point getting a specialist machine until you have your general purpose bike.
Although custom bikes are nice, they are really only neccessary for big/small riders, or for niche styles which the mass market doesnt cater to. If you want a high quality single speed, or lightweight all-ridgid MTB, you wont find them in the shops. These days full sus CX and DH are THE mass market and you are spoilt for choice.

I could ask that it be free but that would be a "perfect" deal:)
