have a 1974 bob jackson with nuovo record gruppo. maximum length seatpost available for nr is 180mm and i hestitate to put in non-period correct seatpost on. i now have the seatpost set so approximately 2.75 inches are in seat tube. i thought i read somewhere once that this was minimum so as not to damage the frame and seat lug. does anyone know if this is correct. i can get by with riding in that position althought ideally i need another inch or so.

That is about right. If the post is not marked, I usually set 2.5" as a minimum (more with looong posts.)

Bare minimum would be 2 inches in order to have the post secured inside the seat tube and not start bending backward.
