Commuting - Finally joined the club!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been cycling for a long time. I now feel like I just started again. I just finished my first week of commuting to work, kinda!
I've been commuting one-way this week. I drove my truck w/bike in the back on Tues and Thurs. Rode home those nights and into work on Weds and today, and drove/will drive my truck home.
I'm doing this for a variety of reasons. One, I need a vehicle at work to visit numerous jobsites around town. Two, my wife has physical therapy on Mon, Weds and Fri and I have to be home by 5:00 in order for her to make her sessions. Three, I'm not ready to ride an hour each way everyday. YET!
All my coworkers think I'm nuts. Everyone offered me a ride when it was raining Tues. night. I rode past a two car accident and the officer directing traffic said, "You've got guts!" I thought, "Two people hurt in cars, and I've got guts?" I also thought, "Yeah, and it's too big, but won't be after doing this for awhile."

Welcome to the club, A2!! You'll be a better person for joining!
I also toss my bike in the back of a truck, but it's parked at a satellite yard, so I can vary my commute distance, either 12km or 27km each way, depending on weather and how I feel. (I seem to have been feeling short the last week or two!)
I'm saving my attempts to ride the whole 47km commute for next year!
What bike are you using for the commute?

Currently using my road bike. It's a LeMond Zurich. I've got her outfitted with a lighting system, and I've got a blinkie on my helmet.
At the moment, I'm mountain bikeless. When I get my new/used bike, I'll probably use that. At this point I dunno!
One way is about 16 miles, with traffic signals, I've been doing the commute in about an hour. Today's time was 1:00.02.

It took me about 2 months to get my 18 mile commute under an hour. It is almost flat though so on days with a tailwind I can really roll. Anyway, welcome to the club!

I also joined today (sort of also)
I have been riding to school on Saturdays for a couple of weeks, but today was the first for riding to the office. I ride from home to the train station, ride the train to my stop, and then ride into the office. Although the train is involved, the ride is still 13.43 mi each way. I'd ride the whole thing, but that'd have me riding a pair of metric centuries every day. 60 mi each way to my office. I'm not sure yet how often I'm gonna do this, but it was a pretty nice ride this morning. Although I did get a flat this am. I threw on my spare tube and went to fill the tire. No air. Oops. Walk 1/2 mi to the only gas station within 2 or 3. Air out of order. D'oh!!! I start walking. cursing, wondering what the heck I'm gonna do. Still another 6 miles or so to the office. I would even have to go WAY out of the way to get to another gas station. I notice the business across the street, "Air Compressor Works" (Thanx you guys!!!). Hee,hee, did I ever luck out on that one. Rode over to the bike shop @ lunch and bought a few CO2s. Phew!
I also had the VP of the company offer to buy a bike rack for the company shuttle van. Cool. I may not have to ride the whole thing every day, 13.4 e.w. is still a little long for every day as I still am a newbie rider.

Congratulations on your commuting. I only commute 5 miles, so I don't know what it would be like to do a 10+ mile commute. I certainly would have to get up a lot earlier. :)
I love riding to work in the rain. With a rain suit on I arrive as dry as my co-workers. I know I get some weird looks, but of course, I get those looks rain or shine. People just don't know what they are missing.
