I met my goal of 1,360 miles for the year this morning, on a glorious, cool, slightly blustery Saturday morning, right where it all began, at my front door. I'm going to spend the rest of the year without even getting on a bike.

A friend and I are going to the San Diego Auto Show this afternoon, an annual event we both enjoy. But over the last few years, my interest has really waned. I haven't bought a car in six years, and there's very few that turn my head anymore, except the occasional oddball like the Honda Element. This year I'm a little curious about the new, longer Toyota Rav-4.

I bought a wonderful book yesterday, Cycling for Life: How to Ride to 100, which is now what I plan to do. I have forty-five years of cycling left, and I can't wait to bring it on!

Happy New Year, everybody! :)

Fantastic Gary!! That is a LOT of miles for 6 mos on a Mtn Bike. I think it's just a springboard for a lot more and better things.

It's very important to take time away from the riding to enjoy other interests. It makes cycling that much more fun and rewarding, especially when rides get longer and tougher.

Enjoy the car show! BTW, Toyota makes a pretty good product. I have two of them, one of which has 400,000+ miles and still gets me to all my cycling events and work!!

Have a terrific New Year!

Well done Gary......besides your personal achievement you've contributed tremendously to 50Plus....your enthusiasm, humor, interesting threads & posts have lent a lot of energy to this forum. Great year for you and the rest of us. And tomorrow is the first of 365.....A whole year to count your miles. Should be a little ceremony as you reset your bike computer. Who knows what today next year will hold!

Meantime, 7:00 am comes early, cold, and a bit darkish tomorrow morn. I may fudge on the starting time.....

Happy New Year to you, too! And, congrats on your mileage. By the way, did you decide on the next version of your Univega? Did you take a look at ANT bikes for some visual effects?

I did look at the ANT bikes, and wow! I love 'em! Too bad they cost an arm and a leg. But maybe one of these days.

As for the Univega, it's to be a freewheel singlespeed and it should be ready by Tuesday, according to the lbs. New tires, tubes, brakes, saddle, and handlebar, and off with the downtube shifters. I can't wait! In fact, I had a dream about the bike last night -- in the dream, the single speed was too hard! I was trying to make them change it, and they didn't want to!
:D

Hey, cool you met your goal, Gary.

By the way, I really like that you think the book is a good one. My copy should arrive later this week. I'm hoping it augments my Cycling Past 50 well, as I think that book is very fine.

Can't say for sure, but I do know I'll be riding one in 2050, the year I turn 100, and I ride my age. Wonder if I'll have gotten that Trek 7.6 by then? :p

what's a 7.6 ? I've got a Trek 7100 hybrid that would kill me for a century although I did do a few metrics on it.

This (http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1343000&f=26) is a Trek 7.6 She's the object of my affection, the love of my life. She doesn't even know me yet. But all that's going to change, sometime this year. Ahhhhh...love! :o
