Advocacy & Safety - Q : affixing messages to badly parked cars?

I have seen a few other threads with comments along the lines of "Wouldn't it be good if we had stickers to affix to cars parked in cycle lanes..." and I was wondering what the actual legal position is in this area (preferably in the UK).

I am not talking about those awful stickers that private carpark patrols slap on violators that take an age to scrape off - I think for a non-authorised person to use those would come under the "wilful defacing of property" category. I was more thinking of something to put on a car saying simply "Please do not park in a Cycle Lane - you are obstructing traffic" that wouldn't fall off in a bit of wind or rain and that was easily removed. I suppose non-adhesive options would include having some business cards printed with that message and slipping one under the windscreen wiper or in the rubber round the window of the driver door - I know that is legal cos I've seen them advertising "Earn $$$ in your spare time" and so on.

You are assuming that people actually give a crap about these things. All you'll be doing is contributing to litter in the streets when the people pull these unsolicited advertisements off of their cars and throw them on the ground.

I remember when there were business cards to leave under windshield wipers that were really popular. Probably the late 70s early 80s. They said something like "Thank you for parking so **** close to my car. Next time please leave me a **** can opener so I can get in."

I have also seen sets of legal looking but fake forms that look like a police parking ticket. You (in general) can fill one one and tuck it under a wiper. The driver finds it and has brief chest pains 'til they see it is not real. The idea was to give them enough stress to encourage them not to do it again. Perhaps someone like the Underware Nazi could get some for us forumites.

I've occasionally affixed some gooey saliva to the driver’s side door handle. But tickets / warnings would be great. I should just go and call the police. There is a used car lot that parks the cars on the sidewalk. This is on a 3 lane, one-way street, with a opposite direction bus lane. Sometimes when I am using the bus lane, a bus comes up behind me on the hill, so I jump on to the sidewalk. But the used car lot parks cars there too. Idiots.

I've got a pad of rather official-looking, but totally bogus, offensive parking tickets. Use them on a regular basis. Found them at a gag store.

When I don't care to stop, I often lick my fingers, then slap them across the outside mirror. Quite rude & lowbrow of me, but I like it.

Yeah then dont' forget to clean your frigging fingers. Who knows what's been on that. Maybe other peoples fingers.

Legally you are allowed to do it but it cannot be affixed. Affixed is a term used to denote use of a fixative such as glue, clips, clamps or any other form of adhesive substance.

It has been done before for a number of platforms and there is no reason why this shouldn't be done. My only recommendation would be that you come up with something a little bit clever, such as fake parking tickets, and make sure that your local media are made aware of it.

There have been a couple of precedential cases, both here and in the US, where use of adhesives, adherents and fixings were determined to constitute vandalism and/or criminal damage. Be warned though, if such a campaign is carried out, there is a chance that it could be considered a matter of public disorder and/or harrasment.

ha ha! I remember those, mid 80s in Texas anyway. They featured an illustration of Mickey Mouse flipping th reader the bird and almost exactly that line there, cept I remember some had "Thanks *******" above the text.
