Ive been taking Metrex Meal Replacement Protien Shakes for breakfast. Ive been mixing them up with different berries and other types of fruits. i take this because i dont have time to eat a full breakfast in the morning. I just put the powder, add water, some fruit and mix and then im off to work or school.

Do you think this is all right? Does anyone else have protien shakes for breakfast?

What are the ingredients of the MetRX protein shake you are adding the fruit to?If its just mainly protein you could buy better quality in bulk(say 5lbs.)much cheaper .If it has a lot of added carbs in the form of sugar you probably want to go with just protein as the fruit adds sugar and maybe add some raw oatmeal if you want complex carbs. As for the shakes generally just watch for the quailty of the added ingredients as you don't want a lot of refined sugars or hydrogenated oils etc. and you will be fine with them. You can always add various things to get pretty much any nutrient profile youwant and as you said it very convenient.Just watch the expense of heavily marketed individual package serving type products if you plan on frequent shakes.

Yes. Depending on how much you make it adds great flavour. The banana helps thicken it up and the soy milk (I used to use milk until I realized I am becoming lactose intollerant).

All in all makes a very complete meal :)

My whole family enjoys them a few times a week, including my 10yr old son. We make ours in a smoothie machine and have all sorts of different ingredients. Just be careful...to much protein powders and their ingredients can have an adverse affect.

A protein shake in the morning makes an EXCELLENT breakfast!!! All that goodness does a body good. Protein, carbs (if you are using an MRP, I am assuming it has carbs), vitamins and minerals first thing in the morning really helps fuel your body for the rest of that day. I have a protein shake for breakfast four or five times a week (usually after my AM workout).

What about having a full breakfast (egg & ham sandwich, etc.) and replacing lunch with MetRX protein mix instead? Does anybody do this?

Yeah, I prefer to eat real food for breakfast too. Eggs and grilled ham.. side of oatmeal & fruit.... yummy.. I'll usually take the shakes before riding or on the ride itself. Even then, I'll usually go with solid foods.

isn't the whole protein shake in the morning part of the low carb diet? ideally you should have protein in evey meal but save the protein shake/powder for after a workout when its more beneficial to recovery.....there's an optimal window of 15-20mins after a workout where a carb&protein recovery drink/shake/bar is most effective.......it gets shunted straight to the muscles

i also think you're better off having a protein shake at night then you are in the morning anyway...studies have shown it helps promote deeper sleep....as well when you're asleep your body basically fasts......having protein in your system as you sleep helps the muscles grow

I'm a big proponent of real food whenever possible too. Science knows a lot, but not so much that something - and usually a lot of things - aren't going to be left out (e.g., very simplistic example is how no one can live on even the best vitamin pills). That said, if it's literally the only breakfast you have time for, then it's definitely better to eat something!

My breakfast on weekdays is usually 100% whole grain flax seed toast with peanut butter and cinnamon, Kashi instant oatmeal with milk and 2 tsp. ground flax seed, some type of fruit, and occasionally a can of tuna with whole wheat crackers and organic honey-mustard (usually eaten individually as I get hungry between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.). On weekends, it's usually either an egg white omelet with cheese and veggies and orange juice, or 5 grain old-fashioned hot cereal (oats, triticale, barley, bran, flax - or something like that), and 100% whole grain toast.

I take 2 scoops of Designer Protein - Natural flavor in water before I rush out the door on my drive to work. After about an hour at work, I have breakfast.

My routine is two scoops Jay Robb Protein powder, eight oz OJ mixed with eight oz water. Drink, exercise then a breakfast of oatmeal, honey and fruit or fruit with a variety of different cereals. Primarily any Optimum blend, (Nature's Path), or grape nuts.

Great way to start the day.

I'll stay low carb before my morning workouts. On these days my breakfast is usually just two scoops of whey protein.

I've been thinking of doing this as I currently do the Carnation instant breakfasts on mornings my stomach doesn't want to deal with an oatmeal bar (I then eat half of the oatmeal bar after the ride at work). Eating a full breakfast on a workday would inevitably cause some poor auto driver to get his car repainted. Doesn't help that I've got 30 minutes between waking up and hitting the road, but getting me up before 6:30 isn't going to happen and I *have* to be on the road by 7:10 at the latest.

Ned, anyone else in SoCal - where do you buy the bulk whey protein? How much is a 44# bag?
I've been buyin mine at Trader Giotto and its a smallish can and seems a bit on the pricey side (but then maybe not...)
Brekkie, most important meal O da day for me. But I tend to space it out. Mostly start the day with some soft fruit - preferred is Banana or Kiwi, then I try to work into some strong carbs and proteins later. As much as I really luv a traditional brekkie, I can only do it on wkends and not iff'n I'm planning on ridin the pedal bike. So the only time I get the old standard brekkie is on days I ride the moto, which seems almost never these days.
Otherwise, Smoothies work for me - no particular mix, whatever is fresh fruit is preferred, but the frozen kind is okay also.
Load in some apples, guava, cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, mango, ALWAYS a banana & Kiwi, Big load of plain Yogurt (soy yoggie iff'n I making for my daughter & I), grapes inseason add real tang to the taste, & a solid scoop or 2 of whey protein. Havn't tried PB, but I might give it a try this week.
I'm real partial to wholewheat crepes (milk & egg) done with fillings of Lingonberry and PB. Do those about every 2 wks or so.
Iff'n I'm gonna be on a longer ride (60+ miles) I'll start the day with a middlin size bowl of oatmeal and banana, and then maybe a 1/2 glass smoothie. Absolutely nothing like Oatmeal to really fuel me for long days on the road or trail. Actually I've done many a powder day on just one solid brekkie bowl of oatmeal and a 2day supply of fig newtons, bananas and water stuffed into my gear pack for the day.
This is bad, its 9 PM, and I can;t wait for brekkie:)
