General Cycling Discussion - Helmet with built in mirror

I was in my LBS this morning and saw this on the counter

Its a helmet with an inbuilt mirror.

I gave it a quick try on and wasn't too sure about it neither was the LBS owner.

Has anyone got one of these and if so how do you find it?

Looks very neat on the paper. I'd give it a try given the possibility. How much does it cost?

I'd even start wearing a helmet if the price was reasoable.

I think it was £50 Sterling. I wasn't paying much attention to the price.

Sheesh - it looks like a REALLY cool gadget, and I am a gadget kind of guy :)

It would get knocked off by a tree, I just know it. Besides if I don't pay attention to my forward motion I run into rocks ;)

Hence the winking eye :D...I realize that. I don't even have reflectors...a big no no in street driving :)

oh, man, I've got to get my hands on one of these!

I'm not so sure. I've looked at these before and I think the constant view in the mirror would be distracting. Also, it might encourage people not to glance over their shoulders, and we all know about blindspots (since cyclists are always in them!)


Also, what if you are riding out of the sun, It could dazzle you.

These things don't work. I tried one and it would shift positions every time I hit even a small bump. I had to readjust it every few minutes. :crash:
Trashed it after a month!

The Reevu helmet looks pretty slick. I wish they had a US or North American distributor.
I'd like to try it.
Is Mike right? Is everything backward? I'm trying to "picture" what I see in my mirror.

I think Mike was being funny. It's a UK picture so the cars are driving on the left anyway. So the mirror view is correct (for a mirror anyway) but its just taken me 5 minutes to work that out without a mirror.

My head hurts :)

I tried one of these at a show today. It was pretty good, but I thought that the actual field of view vertically was much shorter than in the piccie that Mike posted. It was also very busy at the show, with lots of movement and detail, so it was very difficult to pick things out. Perhaps it would be better on the road.

And I had hopes that they might build the visual portion of the thing as an add-on for other helmets, but I think not. There seem to too many special design features specific to this helmet.

An update on availability in U.S. - I contacted the company in the U. K. and was told the Reevu helmets will be available in the U.S. in January '03 and that they "are negotiating distribution as we speak" (12-12-02).
