Training & Nutrition - egg-white based shakes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just read a recipe for a protien shake that had egg whites as a (primary) ingredient. Isn't this supposed to be bad for me? Isn't there some dreaded bacterial infection that I am likely to get if I eat raw egg whites?
List the recipe. (I would like to give it a try).
They supposedly can lead to samonella poisening though I've heard its less likely with free range eggs.I use to literally go overboard adding whole raw eggs to shakes but stopped for another reason. The raw whites also lead to biotin(B vitamin) depletion and I was noticing signs of dry, itchy, flakey scalp symptoms of biotin deficientcy so I stopped.I think its an acquired taste but I grew to love the taste blended with other ingredients.

I have never had a problem with eggs. My biggest thing with them is the protein isn't as well absorbed by the body as whey :)
The recipe is :
1/2 cup egg whites
1 cup frozen yogurt
1 cup orange juice
1 cup fruit (ex blueberries)
blend and serve.
Another :
1.5 cups skim milk
1/2 cup egg whites
1/2 cup frozen yogurt
1 banana
1 tbsp honey
Actually the whole egg is nearly equally in absorbability to whey concentrate while just the whites are not as complete. Some whey isolates reportedly have higher absorbability but lose some important immune stimulating factions and in fact it is absorbed so quickly it can tend to overflood the capasity for muscle growth use and the excess tend to get used for energy making it highly absorbable but not long lasting. Thus it would be good for postworkout for examle but not at night before sleep to combat a long catabolic period.

I read that eggs today are pastuerized so there is little chance of contracting salmonella.

There isn't actually any digestible protein in egg whites.

Good to know. . . so what are the positive/negative nutritional attributes of egg whites?

Where did you hear that? A lot of bodybuilders swear by egg whites as part of their diet. Six egg whites contain 20g protein and only 100 calories.

I don't think this is the case. I looked on the egg carton in my 'fridge and there was nothing about being pasteurized, but there was a warning that said, in essence, eggs should be cooked thoroughly before eating.
There are more palatable and less risky ways to get protein.

1 in 20,000 eggs contains salmonella (according to the USDA).

Soooo, you'll probably catch salmonella before you win the lottery. ;)
I had a friend that got salmonella (chicken, not eggs). No fun. Life is a gamble, choose your risks (but they should at least taste good!).
Hey! I just noticed, I've broken 1000 posts. Tsk, tsk! More squandered time. ;)

But absorbable protein is lower than most other types. I have heard this as well I am just to lazy to look up info.
Most bodybuilders consume 12 egg whites at a time just to get enough protein to absorb :)
