With a bit too much time on my hands this winter and my 3-year-old Rans V-rex sitting forlorn in the garage, I dragged an old, long-unused "Vitamaster" exercise bike out of the attic. It's the kind with a big fan powered by pedals and handlebars that flail back and forth. Looking at this thing with a critical eye, I saw previously unrecognized possibilities. I took off and discarded the handlebars and their related mechanism, also the seat; and then remounted the computer on top of the seat tube facing to the rear. The final step was to place a low-slung lawn chair about a foot behind the thing (tied to it with a rope to prevent it from "walking"). The end result is an indoor exercise bike, at no cost, that pretty closely duplicates the riding position of my V-rex and has similar comfort advantages for reading, watching TV or whatever.

Well, I was always cheap. But it actually works well, and it was fun to be creative!

Wow, that sounds neat! If you were really "cheap" you could place that thing near a heat vent and help circulate the warm air to keep your heating costs down. ;)
