Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just watched this DVD tonight (http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/grizzly_man/). Has anyone else seen it? It is a documentary about this guy who lives with Bears in Alaska for 15 seasons, only to be eaten by one eventually. Actually the heart of the movie ends up dealing with the disturbed subject of the DVD, and i don't mean the bears.
Right now I really don't know what to say about the film. I guess I can just say I am disturbed.

Timothy Treadwell was a very controversial figure here in Alaska, and drew a lot of negative press. Many felt he was taking needless chances to "protect" the bears. If Treadwell wanted to do this, so be it, but the thing that bothers me the most about this whole sad affair was how he involved his GF in his bear quests. She was killed in the same attact the took Treadwell's life. I feel the worst for her and her family and friends.
The film was a lot different that i expected. I expected some rough tough, Grizzly Adams type figure but got an arrogant, somewhat feminine, psycho instead.

He tasted like chicken.

A Bear.
Seriously, I read a review of this movie a while back (I think in the Aussie paper 'The Age'). The words 'disturbing', 'sick', and 'perverted' were used. It sounded interesting, in every sense. I look forward to watching it.
It's amazing how some people can get all lovey dovey about things that can eat them, like sharks, lions, bears etc! Protect them, sure, but don't get to thinking that they are cuddly!

:D
it was made by a shipping company guy?

This is a really interesting film. Directed – or actually “put together from mostly old footage” by the great Werner Herzog.
The thing I had a hard time believing: that somebody that spent that much time around bears could be so naïve about the danger. He treated them like they were domesticated animals – like cute little puppies.
Here’s an IMDb link for the film:

I see your point. I feel the same way but have to wonder....do people think the same thing about cyclists when they get killed by a car? You know... "the highway is no place for a bicycle. It's simply too dangerous. He got what he had coming."
Obviously walking up to a live bear would appear to be more dangerous than cycling on a public roadway, but i think the perception that you are doing something risky so you deserve to die, is still there. This guy did live with these bears every day for 15 seasons and was never attacked. I suppose that could be enough to qualify it as a safe enough activity in his eyes. Still though, he said repeatedly that it was dangerous in the film.
I just kept thinking about cyclists when i watched people being interviewed and saying he got what he deserved. I know a lot of people would say something stupid like that about cycists being run over and that scares me. My greatest fear is not being killed on my bike, it is that any of my friends and family would view me as foolish, and that i caused my own death. It destroys a man's legacy, and without that, there isn't much.
I want to see this....what do you all think about the recording of the couples last minutes not being included in the film?

I ran into the guy a few times on Kodiak. He was an arrogant ass. In his self-serving prophecy to "save the bears" - he ended up being responsible for the killing of two (or three??).
It was just a matter of time before his arrogance caught up with him. Unfortunately it took another persons life as well.
Can you feel my love for him?

I forget, was he a fool or a damn fool?
Cuddly and bear don't easily fit in the same sentence.

Of course i wanted to hear it. Probably glad i didn't however.
Yeah...I know what you mean. I guess it would be rather tasteless to include the audio in the film....and yet I am curious. Sad.

The audio was originally included at the end according to someone who saw it at the Teluride FIlm Festival. Think it was removed just because it was so disturbing and didn't add anything relevant. The sequence where Herzog listens to it as a former lover watches, then he tells her she must never listen to it, well, sometimes the imagination provides a stronger sense of the horror when the details aren't provided.

The audio is horrible...just like you all suspect it is. Larry VanDaele is one of the ADF&G guys that investigated the incident and I had the opportunity to listen in on it with him.
I don't regret hearing it, but it was awful.

Your avatar disturbs me... I can only look at it for a few seconds... but I did like Chris' movie back in the '90s Beverly Hills Ninja..
I saw the Treadwell movie, it was disturbing but not so much... if you've lived you've met people like him. I mean people that should be on meds.
It was cool... one apt portion of the movie... Was when treadwell cursed the flies because they were on his dead friend the fox. He truly didn't see the cirlce of life. There will always be a food chain.
That was amazing.
I agree with you regarding Ranger's avatar!!!

I agree… to the extent that there’s a perception problem among the general public regarding bike safety – it’s less dangerous than it appears. But on the other hand, when I see a cyclist riding at night with no lights, dark clothing, no helmet – I can’t help but think that he’s asking for it.
I think some of the bears that Treadwell was around were somewhat domesticated – they knew him so he wasn’t in that much danger. But remember, near the end, when it was the end of the season and the hungrier bears were around – bears that were strange to him -- that’s when he got mauled.
I agree with you regarding Ranger's avatar!!!
Ya gotta shake it if you got it. ;) Kinda living vicariously through the avatar I guess. I don't have much to shake since I am a svelte cyclist. :D

I think that is appropriate. I've read the transcript and would not want that in the film :( .

Tool or not, what a horrible way to die.
Being the great adventurer that I am, I once tracked down one of those Kodiak bears at Tooronga Park Zoo. :D
You can see all the tigers, lions, gorillas, black bears etc you want, but man, the Kodiaks were impressive!!!! Just the friggin size of the things. I remember doing a double take when I first saw it. Then imagine one of those things, the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, starting to chow down on you.
A horrible way to die.
Nearly as horrible as Rangers avatar.

I don't know...
A bear would happen only once.
Rangers avatar happens every day :D
