Would I be correct to pressume I should have the pads of the aerobars roughly where my elbows are, perhaps only just in front of them?

Yes, that's a very rough asummption. My elbows are just a tad bit short of the pads so if looking from the side of the bike, it looks like my elbows hang off the pads (toward my torso).

You should have approximately 90 degrees from shoulder to elbow and should similar to the two "after" pictures of the man and woman below. In those "after" pictures (though I can't tell 100% since it is a picture), it looks like the elbows are dead on the aero pads.

Cheers, thought so. Just is nice to have some confirmation from somebody else!

Used to have it like that, just now these new profile century bars don't seem to be adjustable. Got extremely long arms so the pads end up being half way along my lower arm! Oh well, probably have to swap in my old ones or look for a replacement.

Yes, my pads are slightly in front of my elbows. I once found a great site that discussed detailed research on aerobar position vs. body composition (width of pads, etc.)...will try to see if I can find it, but you could also search for aerodynamics / aerobars. This one in my favorites isn't it, but is interesting:
