Do you have to have a cyclocross bike or can you just throw some different tires on you roadie if you dont want to go out and by a cyclocross bike

It really depends on the road bike that you have. Most modern road bikes will not have sufficient clearance to mount cyclocross tires.

Stupid amounts of fun, if of course, you allow yourself to have stupid amounts of fun on a bicycle. I've raced road and mountain bikes in the past, and while I haven't raced 'cross (yet?), I have way too much fun on my 'cross bike. I live in Washington DC, where there are endless miles of every kind of paved and unpaved surfaces imaginable. On any whim, I can go from flat-out cruising on a nicely-paved path, then turn off and tackle a steep grassy incline (up and down), fumble around in a cobbled back ally, and play around on the twists and turns of the National mall.

As for bikes, you might be able to squeeze some 700x28cc 'cross tires onto your bike, 30cc if you're lucky, just make sure that your rims and spokes are pretty beefy first. As for the hesitation, just counter it with some patience. Give your bike handleing skills develop before you start pushing your bike past it's pavement limits onto the off-road world.

Cross is way to much fun. There is just something about blasting singletrack in the drops...............

5. Laugh at roadies cringing as they slowly negotiate bumpy, dirty roads and MTBers slugging along the pavement on squishy bikes.
6. Turn every city centre into your own personal urban 'cross course.
7. Ride to work on virtually any route you would please.
8. Get chicks.
