Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - A bikeforum live chatroom

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I think it would be cool if there was a place somewhere on here where we could all chat live in a room. I know they're some sites that have free ones, but with ad's though. What do you think?
We used to have one. Joe would have to get that software up and running.
I'd think it would be a nightmare, though... the forums have WAY evolved since then. There are tons of people in different forums all with different interests. I could not imagine what that chat room would look like with 15 BMX'ers AOl'ese-ing a conversation while two 50+ dudes talk about their glorious rides, and 5 fixies talk about pies, while 12 roadies discuss their OCP. Uuugh.
On second thought, just use MSN messenger and PM the people you like to join in on conversations. ;)

A bit of ageism showing, koffee? ;)
I've considered hosting an invite-only chat session on my own server. Anyone else can do that too for about $25/year.
What's invite only... like msn messenger?

There was a thread about this, a suggestion for an IRC room.
BOttom line is, the forum is far superior to the chatroom.

"Invite only" is sort of discriminatory against trolls, don'tcha think?

I've never used MSN, so I wouldn't know. But on my website's CP, there's a chatroom option. I would have to point people to the address in order for them to participate. I'll look into it a bit more, next time I'm in the CP.

If you say so, burger king. ;)

i like how the forum is indexed so we can find info. a chatroom would defeat that purpose.

Indeed. Exactly. Spot on. Yes. But wouldn't you want to choose who you could discuss P&R with in real time?
Plus if you think that us moderators are planning on modding that. Think again buster! ;)
The chat room wouldn't even be on the mod radar. It would definitely be every man (or woman) for themselves.

why not have one for each subforum? A fixies chat room, a bmx chat room? I'm just thinking out loud here. you know, barnstorming.
Brainstorming, maybe?
No way! people dont do that in the US! Thats some tradition that aussies have. Always been a mystery...

does sarcasm only work with smilies or /sarcasm at the end? maybe...

If I leave off the smilies, it makes people wonder if I'm joking or not. I was only joking. Sorry.

actually that wasn't really sarcasm, more like a sort of slapstick pun or something.
edit: I suppose it reminds us of the lack of inflection when we type.
If people want to chat there are dozens of platforms for that. Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, etc.
Simply get together with other members and chat. Nobody stopping you. As a matter of fact, you could use this thread as a place to share your username etc.
Personally I wouldn't find any value in having a chatroom on these forums. THen again, I'm not 13.
why not use IRC on a server like EFNet?
www.mirc.com for PC users
www.xchat.org for PC / Mac users

true but you cant have a group conversation that way, it need to be in a form of a chat room. I used to go to yahoo running room.. got a few info on that on incoming races ect but it's filled with robots and pervs.. there is no chat rooms on yahoo about cycling and you can no longer create one. I have to tell you, this place is by far the best place i have ever seen, lot s and lots of info and humor withough anyone getting out of hand but sure, I would also love if you could talk live with everyone!:)
