spinnaker

I am trying to mount a Ascent Pack Animal Rack on a Cannondale SR500. The seat stays are too close to the frame mounting holes and do not allow the rack to go level. The rack mounting bars bump into the seat stays.
Does anyone have any suggestions on mounting? One thought I had has to bend the rack bars that attach to the frame (they are detachable from the rack) . But I would be afraid that may weaken the bar.
Another thought was to put a spacer between the rack bar and the mounting location. But this would mean much of the weight would be on the screw itself as there would be very little supporting contact between the rack and the frame.
My last thought would be to manufacture some kind of extension plate but the could prove difficult. Does such an extension plate exist that I can purchase?
