I got stopped by the cops so many times ive lost all respect for them.

Once I was riding my one bike downtown, and it has a broken pair of brass knuckles ziptied to the downtube right before the bottom bracket. And a cop stopped me and made me take them off, then he had the balls to right be a bloody fine.

Never been stopped when I was just riding, but I get harassed for taking photos around town almost every time I do it. Not by the cops, they have better things to do, just by prick business owners and security.

Post a photo of you and your bike. If you look like a little punk, of course they'll harass you. Get over it.

I used to ride everywhere, was never ever stopped once. You must look like troub;e on a bike? I'm sure they wouldn't hassle you for just riding a bike. What exactly are you doing to attract attention. If you just ned a place to ride, why don't you find somewhere else?

How old are you anyway?

In addition, the "masking" of vulgarity by inserting * or another keystroke in place of one or more letters in a vulgar term is unacceptable in most cases.

You might as well have just used another word instead.

Why are so many people afraid of the shift/cap key?

If reflectors are an issue. Why not just put reflective tape on your bike somewhere? No weight gain, and you can cut it into any shape. I would think that sitcker makers would recognise the problem and address it with cool reflective stickers. Especially since alot of kids ride to and from school, and and it gets dark at 4:30, and most you youngster are probable staying after for detention. :) I have a mild hatred for cops for my own reasons. Actually, anyform of government for that matter, but that's a HUGE other debate. But when a cop stops you, be polite, ask him what he suggest you should do so you don/t get introuble or draw attention to yourself. Make joke, be friendly. Get him to like you. Heck, offer him a donut. Go along to get along. Just don't say stupid stuff that will upset them. It won't help your cause at all. Offer to let him ride your bike and see how cool it is, maybe he has a son that like BMX. Most guys are cops because they have HUGE ego's, not because they want to protect and serve.

If you live in a small town chances are that yes, you will most likely be stopped...I live in a small town and I have done some things to pravoce the cops to stop me...Just small stuff like riding in the middle of the road without a light...(with street lights right above me) Oh, and there was one time I was on a highway at night, usually they say, "Get a light or we will start writing you fines and taking your bikes away". This then results in me smoking the cop with a verbal assault. I usually will flip them off and say "What are you going to do take my bicycling liscence away? Oh and there are actually laws that stop you from just taking my property like that, give me he ticket I wont pay for it, and if i run are you going to "Bump" me with your car? That's probably attempted murder. Have fn fitting your car in a 4' ally-way!" Then he says go home and then I usually laugh and say have a nice night...I have yet to get a ticket ever and it's true...They can't really catch you unless your an idiot, and if you get a ticket if you dont pay, I think the state has better things to deal with, and they can't take away your bicycle liscence sorry. And cops are just regular people, with guns. A cop can't do anything if you flip them off. Just be safe and say this before you say anything "My opinion of you is-" because that means that its your opinion and they can do anything thus resulting in you being able to get away with you saying there [edited by moderator]. Etc. All N' All. Just ride and ignore police! :)

And cops are just regular people, with guns.

You must be my long lost brother. How many people give cops more credibility than they deserve just because they have a badge and a gun. They are nothing. Nothing more than you or I. Only they can kill you and maybe just lose their job. It's a sick world when the police state has so much power. Here's the clincher. You don't have to submit to police authority as long as you can get more people to show up with guns than they can. Which isn't ever going to happen. Think: Waco Texas. They got guns, tanks, and no ones getting in trouble for using them.

Oh well, life is short, they'll all die someday too. Sweet (hot) justice on the other side for them.

I'll attribute your ignorance to your age. Other members are free to form their own opinions. But I did have to edit some language out. You should know what is acceptable, and what is not. If you have to be told again, you get a warning. 3rd warning, you're banned.

Woah I never thought this topic would get so much attention but anyways. Yes, cops have to much power, they can stop you and pat you down when ever they want to, write you a ticket for anything they want to, whether you deserved it or not, and then turn you around and shoot you in the back and say you were resisting arrest. When does it stop, and im actually good friends with a bike cop, exept the bike cops around here are actually very understanding of us BMXers. This pot head tried to steal one of my friends bikes and he tried to run from a bike cop, and well he got about half a block before the cop nudged his peg the right way. I never saw someone slide so far on there forehead before. Dude FMFBMX thats some nice ridin, I thought me and my home boys where good at pissin off and avoiding cops, lol

They can't stop you and pat you down whenever they want, nor can the write a ticket for whatever they want, and they certainly can't shoot you and claim you were resisting arrest. Any authority they have is given to them by laws, which are not written by them. If you are ignorant of the laws, or your rights, then that is your fault, not theirs.

And please don't use "Lol". This is not AOL.

Just because you ware a badge doesnt mean you cant take advantage of your power. Take a look at this Safety and Advocacy thread, "Bells, lights on bicycles: IT'S THE LAW!!! (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=165028)" The bottom line is that if you are on the street, the cops can stop you if your bike doesn't comply with every stupid bicycle law. If you don't like those rules, work with your local or state advocacy groups to change the law.

Post 19 (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=2017908&postcount=19) links to a DC police policy report (http://www.policecomplaints.dc.gov/occr/lib/occr/pdf/policy_rec_bike.pdf) on the practice of stopping and searching cyclists. The report defends the legality of the stops, but questions their wisdom.

If you want to try to change things, you could call the police station and ask for a meeting with the cops. Be polite and respectful, but tell them what you see is the problem. Then listen to the cops. See if they have other concerns, drug dealing in the area, perhaps. They might also have had complaints about BMX'ers on private property.

If you work around those problems and you show them you are not a problem, they might harrass you less. If you have a cycling advocacy group, they might be able to help mediate.

BMX, much like skateboarding, is against the law, whether or not it's directly stated. Damaging/destroying private/public property? Loitering? Trespassing?
